Hello everyone, I am planning to install an IKEA Besta combination as storage in one of my bathrooms. Since wet rooms usually pose a challenge for furniture made of wood-based materials, I want to specifically address the topic: "How to best secure IKEA BESTA in wet rooms?"
I am looking for tips on how to protect the modules from moisture without causing immediate damage or swelling. Should they be additionally treated with waterproofing, are there special seals, or is protection more about the method of installation? Are there any experiences with particular paints or coatings to sustainably extend the lifespan of this furniture in a wet room environment?
I am also interested in advice on the proper way to fix them to walls exposed to higher humidity, as well as possible recommendations regarding the distance from the floor – a terrace would be an additional plus. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Should one use special screws for wet rooms here, or is a rust protection coating sufficient?Stainless steel screws are best because they are naturally corrosion-resistant and do not cause rust issues. Applying a rust protection coating afterward is more of a temporary fix that may require ongoing maintenance.

Which coating would you recommend for the edges? Is there a difference between solvent-based vs. water-based sealants? For wet rooms, a water-based, clear acrylic lacquer with mold protection is the most suitable, as it has low odor and dries faster. Solvent-based coatings often offer somewhat better water resistance but are less favorable due to health and environmental concerns.

Whether the back side of the BESTA units should be completely sealed or whether ventilation exchange remains important for the furniture? The back should not be completely airtight, as this would trap moisture. Allowing some air circulation enables drying, which reduces damage over time.
