Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Hemnes shelving unit from IKEA and noticed that it stands slightly crooked, even though the floor is quite level. The tilt is minimal but noticeable, especially when the shelf is fully loaded. My question is: How can I get the Hemnes shelf to stand straight again?

I suspect it could be due to the design or unevenness between the floor and the shelf feet. Are there specific methods to adjust or stabilize the shelf without having to take it completely apart?

Perhaps others here have experience with the Hemnes system or similar IKEA furniture and can share tips on how to solve these issues permanently and securely. Thanks in advance for any help!

The challenge with Hemnes shelves often lies in the back panel being made of thin material. While it provides stability to the unit, it can easily bend with minor unevenness, causing the shelf to lean slightly. I would suggest the following approach:

- First, check if the floor is truly level. A spirit level placed at several points under and beside the shelving unit can help with this.
- Next, inspect the feet of the shelf: Hemnes units usually have felt pads or small plastic glides underneath. Sometimes placing small shims or rubber pads under the feet helps to compensate for unevenness.
- If the leaning is caused by warped side panels, it’s advisable to carefully lift the unit off the floor and tighten or reinforce the back panel with additional thin screws. Be careful not to damage the material while doing this.
- Optionally, installing a metal angle bracket at the bottom can increase stability.

It is important to adjust step by step and repeatedly check the vertical alignment with a spirit level. If you can provide more details about your room (for example, flooring type, shelf placement), the issue could be assessed more precisely.

This method has worked well for me with similar problems.

This is a good approach. With wooden shelves like Hemnes, the material can easily warp due to humidity or temperature changes. It is important to tighten the screws gently to avoid cracking the MDF or solid wood material.

Additionally, check whether the dowels and screws are firmly secured. Looseness often leads to imbalance, causing the shelf to lean or tilt.

Another option is to use washers or adjustable leveling feet. Unfortunately, not all IKEA models come with adjustable feet, but sometimes installing such accessories or slightly modifying the feet can help.

Overall, inspect the entire construction for weak points—not just the floor. Usually, it’s a combination of slight floor unevenness and minor material warping.

I understand how frustrating a slight tilt can be, especially when you put a lot of effort into assembling it. I had a similar experience when I first set up my Hemnes shelf.

At first, I also tried using a spirit level to check the floor because I thought the floor was uneven. In my case, the issue was actually the back panels, which were not cut perfectly straight, causing one side to stick out slightly and making the shelf unstable.

What helped me was not just securing the back panel with the included nails but also tightening it with small screws and washers. This made the whole thing much more stable.

If you can attach the shelf to a wall using suitable brackets or holders, that can also greatly improve its stability.

If possible, I recommend lifting the shelf off the floor to see if it “wobbles” easily. This way, you can identify exactly where the problem areas are.

Sometimes, connecting the shelf firmly to other furniture in the room with a solid connecting strip can also reduce movement.
