ᐅ How can the surface of Ikea Brimnes furniture be protected during transport?

DALEDAI recently purchased the Ikea Brimnes series and plan to arrange the transport to my apartment myself. I am wondering how to best protect the surface of this furniture to avoid scratches, scuffs, or unattractive wear during transportation. The surface of Brimnes is made of MDF with a foil coating, which is sturdy but not indestructible.
Based on your experience, what materials or methods are suitable for protecting the furniture during transport? Are simple blankets sufficient, or is it better to use special protective fleece, foam, or similar materials? Are there any techniques that are especially useful when transporting the furniture in a car or station wagon? I would appreciate any practical tips, advice, and also warnings about what to avoid.

Hey, great question! From my own experience, the surface of Ikea Brimnes furniture is quite durable but still really prone to small scratches. When transporting, I usually use thick, soft wool blankets or moving blankets, which you can get fairly cheaply. I don’t just wrap the furniture with the blankets; I also place several layers underneath, especially at the edges, which are more vulnerable. Additionally, in the vehicle, I make sure nothing shifts during the trip – ratchet straps and non-slip mats are perfect for this!
If you want to be absolutely thorough, you can also use plastic transport film, which is often available at hardware stores. It protects against dust and moisture and keeps the blankets from sliding around.
Go for it, it works really well! You’ll be glad during your next move when nothing is scratched! 😊👍

Regarding surface protection measures for Ikea Brimnes: The furniture surface consists, as correctly described, of MDF with a foil coating, which offers limited resistance to mechanical stresses such as scratches or impacts. Practical, tested approaches are:
- Using soft moving blankets or felt pads as cushioning, especially on corners and edges
- Additional securing with stretch wrap to hold the cushioning in place
- Preventing slipping by using anti-slip mats in the loading area
- Avoiding direct weight or pressure points on the surface, for example from boxes or other furniture
- Avoiding sandy or dirty materials between the furniture pieces
This is the current standard practice in private transport.
Foam can be used additionally but is only effective if it is at least 1-2 cm (0.4–0.8 inches) thick to improve shock absorption.
A well-organized loading area is crucial to minimize movement during transport.

Are there any techniques that are especially useful when transporting furniture in a car or station wagon? It’s interesting that you’re asking about optimal protection for transport in a car, because realistically, with typical IKEA-style furniture, you’ll usually need multiple trips or packing aids. The problem is that in private moves, people rarely have professional moving blankets or vehicles.
I find the commonly used method of blankets and stretch wrap somewhat overrated – it’s too loose and prone to slipping. If the trunk is small and the furniture bulky, that’s usually not enough. It’s better, if possible, to disassemble the furniture and pack individual parts in sturdy boxes that can then be secured.
A provocative point:
- The most important protection isn’t the soft covering but how you position and secure the furniture parts.
- Especially the foil surface of Brimnes is quite sensitive to abrasion from harder materials.
Brief summary: Invest more time in carefully disassembling, packing in suitable boxes, and securing the load rather than relying on blankets that will slip anyway!
To address DALEDA’s question in detail: Protecting the Ikea Brimnes surface during transport is important because, although the laminate coating appears sturdy, small scratches remain very visible. Here is my multi-step suggestion:
- Disassemble the furniture where possible. This reduces the risk of pressure marks and makes it easier to protect each part properly.
- Pay special attention to padding corners and edges, as these are most vulnerable during handling and transport. I recommend using foam edge protectors or, at least, wrapping thick blankets around the corners.
- Wrap flat surfaces tightly with stretch film to prevent padding from shifting and to keep dirt away.
- Non-slip mats or rubber mats placed under the furniture pieces help prevent movement during vehicle transport, which can cause scratches.
- Particularly sensitive drawer fronts and doors can be additionally protected with tissue paper or crepe paper before applying blankets or film.
If you follow these steps, you should be able to transport the Brimnes furniture well protected—whether in a station wagon or a van. It is important not to stack furniture pieces directly on top of each other without protection between the individual elements.
