Hello everyone, I’ve noticed an annoying problem with the hinges on the doors of my IKEA Billy bookshelf at home: they squeak quite loudly when opening or closing. This is not only annoying in daily use but also seems to indicate lack of maintenance or wear. My question is: what is the best way to fix squeaky hinges on a Billy? I’m especially interested in which lubricant to use, whether the hinges should be removed for this, and if there are any special tips for reassembly to ensure the squeaking stops permanently. I appreciate detailed advice, as I would rather not buy a new bookshelf right away. Thanks in advance!

That’s brilliant, so many options! 🙂 After years of squeaking, I treated my Billy shelf with some Teflon spray – amazing effect! No noise for weeks! Just remove the door, spray the hinges, let it dry, and voilà, silence. Give it a try and let us know how it works for you!

I think the question is a bit narrow. Maybe the problem isn’t the hinge itself, but the design of the Billy unit? It probably squeaks because cheap materials and construction can’t handle much stress. Lubrication is at best a temporary fix. A proper repair would be to replace the hinges with higher-quality ones.

Also: How often is the shelf moved or loaded? Could the issue be more related to usage than to the hardware? Just something to consider.

I partly agree with you, but in many cases, a simple lubrication is enough to make everyday use quieter and more pleasant. Not everyone wants or can immediately install expensive replacement parts. And Billy is, after all, a very common and affordable piece of furniture that many people need a simple solution for.

However, if the shelf is truly worn out, replacement is obviously the only option. That’s why I recommend: clean, lubricate, inspect – and if necessary, get a replacement. You have to stay pragmatic.

Remove the door from its hinges, spray the hinges with silicone spray, and reattach the door. Done. Clean the hinges before lubrication to extend their lifespan. If the squeaking continues, replace the hinge.
