Hello everyone,

I have noticed that the door of my Billy bookcase has been making a rather loud and annoying squeaking noise when I open or close it for some time now. I am mainly interested in how to permanently fix this squeaking without having to take apart the entire door or the bookcase. I have some basic understanding that the squeaking often comes from the hinges or fasteners, but I would appreciate specific advice on diagnosing the issue and the best repair methods, possibly including recommendations on materials or tools that work best for this. Maybe some of you have practical experience with this particular problem on BILLY doors?

Thanks in advance for your help!

to treat with a spray oil (such as WD-40 or a special lubricant for furniture)

Thank you for the explanation about the oil. Since I read that WD-40 is not a true lubricant but rather cleans and provides short-term protection, would a special lubricant be better for my purpose?

Silicone- or Teflon-based sprays are often recommended

What about low-maintenance alternatives that don’t attract dust so quickly? In an apartment, I don’t want the door to get dirty even faster.

If I were to remove the door, how important are the screws and fastenings exactly? I would prefer not to damage the shelving unit. Is it possible to adjust anything to reduce the squeaking, or is that less important?

I appreciate any advice!

Since this topic has been mentioned several times, here is a brief summary of what makes sense from a technical perspective:

1. First, check the hinges to see if they are firmly seated. Loose screws can cause movement and create noise.

2. Then treat them with a suitable lubricant. Silicone spray is recommended for furniture because, unlike oil, it does not attract dust.

3. If the plastic bushings are worn, lubrication has little effect; in this case, replacement is advisable.

4. The door adjustment on a BILLY bookshelf can usually be made by adjusting the hinge attachments to ensure even pressure on the hinges, which also reduces squeaking.

5. Important: Do not use oils or greases that penetrate the wood, as this can cause stains or swelling damage.

As an alternative to silicone spray, graphite powder can be used; it is dry and has good sliding properties.

Hi everyone! 🙂

I wanted to share a tip I recently tried: I used a silicone lubricant spray from the hardware store that I had leftover – it works really well for squeaky hinges.

Quick tip: Don’t spray too much, just a thin layer, otherwise it can get sticky. Then open and close the doors a few times to help spread the spray evenly.

I’m grateful for any advice!

I totally understand, that problem is really annoying.

Also: If you’re handy, grab a small flat-head screwdriver and check the hinge bearings for dirt or small wood chips. Sometimes, that’s where the issue is. Good luck! 🙂

Remove the door, spray the hinges with silicone spray, and tighten the screws. If the hinges are damaged, replace them. Done.

Correct, WD-40 mainly cleans and displaces moisture but is not a long-lasting lubricant. For permanent lubrication of BILLY hinges, I recommend a fine silicone spray or Teflon oil.

is there something you can adjust to reduce the squeaking

The hinges on BILLY shelves are usually simple; precise adjustment options are limited. However, tightening the screws can reduce any excess play. This often lowers friction and noticeably reduces squeaking.

Has anyone in this thread dealt with worn plastic parts on BILLY hinges?

In this case, replacement is the best solution. Since hinges with plastic bushings can wear out, only a full replacement helps. Original spare parts are usually inexpensive and fit perfectly.
