Hello everyone, I’ve noticed an annoying problem with the hinges on the doors of my IKEA Billy bookshelf at home: they squeak quite loudly when opening or closing. This is not only annoying in daily use but also seems to indicate lack of maintenance or wear. My question is: what is the best way to fix squeaky hinges on a Billy? I’m especially interested in which lubricant to use, whether the hinges should be removed for this, and if there are any special tips for reassembly to ensure the squeaking stops permanently. I appreciate detailed advice, as I would rather not buy a new bookshelf right away. Thanks in advance!

Hello Jackge, first of all: A squeaking hinge usually happens because the joints are dry or dirty. In Billy shelves, the hinges are typically simple pivot or inset hinges that wear out over time due to friction.

My advice: Start with a little WD-40 or a special silicone oil. Spray it directly into the hinge, and if possible, open and close the door a few times so the oil can spread. If you can, you can also remove the hinges and clean them separately, for example with a cloth or a small brush.

Avoid using thick grease, as it can attract dust and become sticky over time. Silicone spray or a light oil are better choices. Hope this helps you!

Hey Jackge ;-) I can only agree with Katau!

Personally, I usually use a bit of sewing machine oil, which is very thin and doesn’t attract as much dirt as other oils. The plus side: you only need very small amounts – just one drop, then swing the door a few times and voilà, no more noise!

Oh, and while you’re at it, check the screws too – the hinges might be a bit loose, which can also cause squeaking. Good luck!

That pretty much describes the situation, although I wonder if the squeaking might also be caused by material fatigue. In some cases, the coating wears off due to friction, or small residues build up. Simply applying lubricants might not be enough. Have you checked whether the hinges are still firmly seated or if there are any tiny signs of rust?

Good point. In my opinion, before lubricating, you should definitely check the fastenings; otherwise, you’re just treating the symptoms, not the cause.

Does anyone here specifically use IKEA components as replacement hinges? Are there quality differences?

Tighten the screws, clean the hinge, apply a light lubricant, done.

If you remove the hinge, you can clean it more thoroughly. Afterwards, spray it with silicone spray and spread it evenly. This lasts longer than regular oil.
