Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to install an Ikea Metod kitchen unit in my small kitchen, which is only about 2.5 meters (8 feet) wide and 1.8 meters (6 feet) deep. My goal is to make the best possible use of the available space while keeping it functional – meaning enough storage, a practical work surface, and well-thought-out appliance integration.

I am very interested in how you have set up your Metod kitchen units in small spaces, which combinations have proven effective, for example regarding cabinet sizes, countertops, or storage options. Also, any special tips for cleverly maximizing limited space would be helpful, such as corner solutions, pull-out drawers, or integrated organization sets.

I look forward to your advice and experiences, ideally with practical guidance on planning and implementation. Thank you in advance!

Regarding the question about large versus small drawers:

I personally chose a combination
- larger bottom drawers for dishes and pots,
- smaller upper drawers for cutlery and kitchen utensils.

This keeps things organized and makes optimal use of the storage space.

And for corner solutions: Does anyone have experience whether a carousel remains practical when storing a lot inside, or is it better to use drawers?

My advice: For Ikea Metod, drawers with full extension are a better choice because they are easier to access. If the corner cabinet allows, integrating a LeMans pull-out or Magic Corner is even more efficient.

I sometimes find the small kitchen really frustrating because you constantly have to balance between storage and maneuverability.

I understand how that is – I personally spent a long time figuring out how not to end up with too small work surfaces. My advice: rather have a bit fewer cabinets, but more open space and good task lighting. You often underestimate how important the work surface is, especially in small kitchens!

If possible, choose wider cabinets instead of deeper ones and add wall-mounted shelves or magnetic strips for cooking utensils.

Small kitchens have their own charm – it works well once you let go of the idea that everything has to be huge.

My trick with Ikea Metod:
- I leave 80cm (31.5 inches) of countertop space on both sides of the cooktop; the rest is 60cm (24 inches).
- Wall cabinets only go up to half the wall height, leaving open space below for spice racks and knife holders.

I can relate to that – I spent a long time figuring out how not to live with too little workspace myself.

Small kitchens require creativity, not frustration. Flexibility through rolling carts or wall cabinets makes it easier!

I also have a small Metod kitchen and can only recommend not trying to fit too much in at once.

Friendly tip: If you want to add a bit of lifestyle, consider combining open shelves with baskets. This creates a more airy feeling, especially in small kitchens.

Corner carousels in IKEA Metod help to make full use of the space.

Corner carousels are great if you don’t store too much in them – otherwise it gets tedious to pull everything out all the time. I use mine for supplies I don’t need very often.

Thanks for the great and diverse feedback so far.

I have a detailed question:

Since I am planning to install the Metod kitchen base units along a wall with a radiator, the cabinet height is currently set at 80 cm (31.5 inches) to avoid restricting heat output. Should I still stick with the 80 cm (31.5 inches) height, or are there flexible solutions that offer more usable storage space without blocking the radiator?

Additionally, a laminate countertop is planned. Does anyone have experience with this combination—particularly regarding moisture resistance and durability in small kitchens?

Regarding the height of base cabinets above radiators:

It is recommended to maintain at least 10 cm (4 inches) of clearance from the radiator to avoid disrupting air circulation, which can damage both the heating system and the cabinet.

Ikea Metod offers adjustable legs that allow for practical height adjustments. Alternatively, a panel or baseboard with ventilation slots can be used if the clearance is tight.

Concerning laminate countertops:
- Ensure water-resistant edge sealing.
- Avoid standing moisture to prevent swelling.
- Laminate is affordable and durable but is less heat-resistant than materials like stone or solid wood.

For small kitchens, laminate is a practical compromise.
