Hello everyone,
I am planning to mount an Ikea Pax wardrobe on a drywall or plasterboard wall, but I have concerns about the load-bearing capacity and safety of these types of walls. My goal is to secure the wardrobe firmly so that it remains stable even when fully loaded and does not tip over or damage the wall.
My specific question: Which mounting methods would you recommend for Ikea Pax wardrobes on drywall or plasterboard walls to ensure a safe and durable installation? Which anchors or reinforcements are appropriate, and how should the wall be prepared? Does anyone have experience with the necessary preparations, such as locating the wooden or metal studs, and how best to use them?
I appreciate any detailed explanations or tips, especially advice on common mistakes to avoid.
Thanks in advance!

Could you briefly explain how to choose the right heavy-duty anchor for drywall?Sure. When selecting a heavy-duty anchor, consider the following points:
- Allowable load: The anchor should be rated for at least 20–30 kg (44–66 lbs) per fixing point, which is important for heavy furniture.
- Type: There are various types, such as expansion anchors, toggle anchors, or pop rivet anchors. Toggle anchors are the most common choice for drywall.
- Length: The anchor must be long enough to fully expand behind the board.
- Material: Galvanized steel is better for humid areas; otherwise, plastic or metal anchors can be used, with metal often providing stronger hold.
- Drill hole size: Make sure the hole diameter matches the anchor exactly.

What would be practical alternatives here?As an alternative to standard anchors, specially designed hollow wall anchors are suitable for drywall. These are often labeled in hardware stores as “drywall anchors” or “toggle anchors.” You can also use these for assembling IKEA cabinets if no specific anchors are included. The safest option, whenever possible, is to screw directly into the stud.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

Could you briefly explain how to choose the right heavy-duty anchor for drywall? From my personal experience, toggle anchors are a very practical choice. They work by unfolding behind the drywall panel, distributing the load.
- It’s important that the drywall is at least 12.5 mm thick (1/2 inch), otherwise the anchors won’t hold.
- The drill hole size and the anchor must match perfectly for a secure fit.
- If possible, spread the anchoring over at least two points to distribute the weight better.
During my last installation, I had very good results even without screwing directly into the studs.
If the cabinet will be very heavy, I still recommend a wooden substructure for the best support.
I hope this helps give you more confidence.
