Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Ikea Hemnes cabinet. During assembly or later repair attempts, some screws broke – for example, the wood screws that are often used in the pre-drilled holes. Now I’m missing support in some areas, and I’m wondering what the best way is to repair this without damaging the furniture or having to take it completely apart. Are there any proven tricks or materials to reinforce the spots where screws have broken off? I usually use the original screws and assembly instructions, but I’ve realized that the wood in those areas is no longer load-bearing. Thanks for your advice!

Is there perhaps a possibility to use metal sleeves or some kind of threaded insert?Threaded inserts made of metal are often designed for solid wood. Since Hemnes is mainly made of MDF or particleboard, these inserts don’t hold very well because the material is brittle.
Repair methods using wood glue, dowels, or wood filler have proven to work better. If you want to use metal, you might consider attaching a small wooden board or a piece of plywood as reinforcement at the spot, so you can screw in more securely.
Important: Always pre-drill carefully and screw in with care to avoid further damage.
I had the same problem and successfully used wooden dowels. It’s important to slightly enlarge the old hole, insert the dowel with wood glue, let it dry thoroughly (at least one day), and then screw in very carefully. In my experience, this actually holds better than before! Don’t get discouraged, it works great! 🙂
Great topic! 😊 With the Hemnes, you can fix a lot if you know the right tricks! My tip: If screws break, always remove all the old material first. Then apply glue and use wood in the form of toothpicks or dowels. This provides support and new material. And don’t worry: With a bit of patience, it works perfectly! Good luck, you can do it! 😄

Simply remove the remaining screws, fill the hole with wooden dowels (10 mm (0.4 inches) or larger), moisten with wood glue, let it dry, then insert new screws. This is definitely the best approach. Just an addition: If the hole becomes too large or the wood is crumbly, you might also consider adding a wooden plate inside as reinforcement, if possible. This will help avoid further repairs later on.
