KusohauHello everyone,
I own several IKEA Hemnes furniture pieces and have noticed that some small parts, such as wooden dowels, screws, or covers, have experienced wear or damage. My question is: How can I repair or, if necessary, replace these IKEA Hemnes small parts myself without having to disassemble the entire piece or order expensive replacement parts? I am especially interested in proven DIY methods for fixing minor damage and tips on where to find suitable spare parts or how to improvise them if original parts are not available. Thank you in advance for your experiences and advice!

Hello Kusohau,
First of all, a warm welcome to the forum! Your question is very specific and important because IKEA Hemnes furniture is generally sturdy, but the small parts can sometimes cause issues.
Basically, I recommend carefully cleaning the areas with stuck or broken wooden dowels and reattaching them with wood glue if needed. Screws that have loosened can be reinforced by inserting a small piece of wood or a toothpick to regain grip.
If you need original replacement parts, it’s worth taking a quick look at the assembly instructions, as they often include part names and sometimes order numbers. Otherwise, you can check the IKEA website or ask for spare parts at the store.
If parts like trim pieces or narrow strips are damaged, you can often repair them using craft glue and fine sandpaper, then paint or wax to match the surface.
If you like, I can also provide a step-by-step guide for specific types of repairs. Just let me know!

Specifically, I’m having an issue with the small wooden dowels on the drawer fronts of my Hemnes desk; some of them have broken out. Also, a panel on the inside has chipped. A detailed repair guide for something like this would be invaluable so I don’t make any mistakes.
Hello Kusohau,
When it comes to repairs on IKEA Hemnes small parts, especially wooden dowels and trim, I recommend the following approach:
- First, check that the area to be fixed is clean and free of dust, as this affects any adhesive’s effectiveness.
- For worn-out dowel holes, you can use wood glue and small wooden fillers (e.g., small wood chips or toothpicks) to enlarge or relining the hole. Insert the filler with glue into the hole, let it dry thoroughly (several hours), trim it flush, and then reinsert the dowel.
- For chipped trims, you can repair them with a special furniture glue (preferably waterproof polyvinyl acetate glue). Apply the glue thinly, position the trim carefully, and secure it with painter’s tape or small clamps to ensure enough pressure for good adhesion. Watch out for excess glue, which you can carefully sand off after drying.
- Some trims can also be filled with a thin layer of wood filler, then sanded and color-matched. For the final finish, furniture wax or color-matched paint works best.
My question to help you better: What type of wood are your Hemnes furniture made of? Pine or MDF with a coated surface? This can influence the repair method. Also, do you prefer a visually perfect repair or more of a functional stability?
If you mean specific screws or other connectors, please let me know, and I can offer tips on those as well.

My question to you for better assistance: What type of wood are your Hemnes furniture pieces made of? Pine or MDF with a coating? As far as I know, the parts are mostly made of solid pine wood. The drawer fronts and panels have a white paint finish. I am looking for a repair that is both functionally sound and as discreet as possible. A perfect appearance would, of course, be ideal but is not essential if it would require a very elaborate process.
