Hello everyone, I have a fairly specific question and hope to benefit from your experience: How can I effectively protect IKEA BESTÅ furniture from water damage in the bathroom?

I plan to use a bathroom cabinet from the BESTÅ series, but I’m unsure how to best protect the wood or surface against moisture and occasional splashes.

What preventive measures would you recommend to ensure the furniture lasts a long time without swelling or damaged edges? Are there special varnishes, sealants, or placement tips?

I understand that the wood is not completely waterproof, but perhaps there are practical solutions that provide at least moisture resistance. Many thanks in advance for your advice!

I would treat the back panels and edges with a transparent acrylic lacquer or wood preservative glaze. This provides good protection against water. Additionally, you should avoid placing the cabinet directly on the floor to prevent rising moisture from entering from below.

It is important to ensure proper sealing when using BESTÅ in the bathroom. I recommend sealing all exposed edges with waterproof silicone and applying an additional thin layer of clear varnish that repels moisture. Furthermore, I suggest positioning the cabinet at a sufficient distance from the shower and sink to avoid direct water splashes. Good ventilation of the room is also essential to minimize condensation.

Use wood preservatives and always seal edges thoroughly. Basically, never place directly against wet areas or water-bearing surfaces. This helps prevent most water damage.

This is a very good approach. In addition, I would suggest aiming for as smooth a surface finish as possible, since rough or textured surfaces tend to absorb more moisture. A matte, water-repellent clear varnish works well for this purpose. Regular inspections and touch-ups of the sealing also help to prevent damage at an early stage.

Great topic! I painted my BESTÅ cabinet with a matte, moisture-resistant paint – the result is fantastic! I also added rubber feet underneath to prevent moisture from reaching the bottom. This setup has been working perfectly for me for almost 2 years now! 😊 Just be bold, the cabinet looks great and is very durable!
