Hello everyone, I have a problem that I would like to solve: How can I effectively protect IKEA Malm furniture from moisture to prevent swelling or mold? Unfortunately, my apartment is quite damp, especially in the rooms where I have the Malm dressers. I am looking for simple but effective methods that are also long-lasting. Are there any special sealants, impregnations, or other practical measures I can use without affecting the appearance or functionality of the furniture? Just keeping it dry is not enough for me. I look forward to helpful tips and experiences!

It is best to prime the backs and undersides of the Malm furniture with a special wood protection varnish. Additionally, stick small rubber pads under the feet to prevent direct contact with moisture on the floor.

That's great that you're looking for solutions! 🙂 My recommendation: apply a thin layer of clear lacquer or wood oil! That really protects and keeps the piece of furniture looking nice! And don't forget a dehumidifier – it helps a lot!

Paint or rub in with furniture care oil. It is important to avoid any standing moisture, as this will cause the wood to swell.

Use silicone-free wood preservatives, otherwise the furniture may darken over time. Also maintain good indoor climate conditions; regular ventilation is important.

To prevent moisture damage to IKEA Malm furniture, I recommend the following approach: First, apply a primer protective layer to the visible surfaces, especially the unfinished edges and back panels, as these are more vulnerable to liquids and humidity. A special clear lacquer designed for MDF or particleboard with water-repellent properties is suitable for this. Second, keep the furniture away from direct moisture sources and choose a location that allows good air circulation. Third, regular inspections and, if necessary, re-treatment with wood care oil or clear furniture wax can help extend durability. Finally, it is essential to attach rubber pads or felt gliders under the legs to prevent direct contact with moisture on the floor. Combining these measures ensures long-lasting protection against moisture damage.
