Hello everyone, I am looking for recommendations on how to care for my IKEA Malm furniture effectively and gently using simple household products. The furniture is made of coated wood, and I want to avoid using harsh chemicals or damaging the surface. It is important to me that the care not only removes surface dirt but also addresses minor scratches or dull spots without affecting the paint or coating. Are there any proven home remedies or techniques you would recommend for regular cleaning and refreshing? I would appreciate any tips, including advice on dosage and frequency of application!

The maintenance of Malm furniture using household products can be quite effective if the material properties are taken into account. For cleaning, a soft cloth or a microfiber cloth with lukewarm water and a few drops of mild dish soap is suitable. Afterwards, it is important to wipe the surface dry with a dry cloth to prevent water spots.

For minor scratches, furniture waxes or special wood polishes available on the market can be used. These often contain natural oils, similar to those found in household products like olive oil or linseed oil. However, caution is advised, as applying too much oil can leave the surface greasy.

I often wonder how effective it is to use oils like olive oil on coated furniture.

Oils do not properly penetrate lacquered or coated surfaces but tend to sit on top, potentially attracting dust and dirt. Are there any studies or at least practical experiences on this? Perhaps other products are better suited without weighing down the surface or leaving it greasy.

Basically, it should be noted that Malm furniture from IKEA is usually made of particleboard with a melamine coating. This surface is quite resistant to moisture and scratches, but it is not a genuine wood surface.

Therefore, I recommend the following for cleaning:
- A slightly damp microfiber cloth (just lightly moistened)
- Neutral cleaning agents, no abrasive cleaners or alcohol
- For minor scratches, use special repair pens for melamine or clear furniture polish instead of oils or waxes

Household products like vinegar or citric acid are not recommended, as they may damage the coating.

For the care of Malm furniture using simple household methods, it is important to clearly distinguish between cleaning and restoration. Cleaning can be done with lukewarm water and a drop of dish soap. Important points to note:

1. Avoid standing water on the surfaces, as moisture can penetrate the edges and cause the particleboard to swell.
2. If you want to refresh matte areas or fine scratches, you can gently polish with a very small amount of pure linseed oil on a soft cloth.
- Be careful: this will slightly darken and make the surface glossy, so test on an inconspicuous spot first!
3. Permanent scratches can be repaired with color-matched furniture markers, which are available at most hardware stores.

Can you specify the extent of wear or damage on your Malm furniture? This would help to recommend the method more precisely.

Thank you for the contributions so far. @Lilygla: Most of the furniture is in good condition, with only a few surfaces appearing slightly dull from daily use, and some small scratches on corners caused by moving items around.

I understand that aggressive acids should be avoided. Regarding the use of linseed oil: would it also be advisable for white or light-colored painted surfaces, or should it be avoided altogether in those cases? I want to avoid any discoloration.

The notes about moisture are also helpful, as I sometimes tend to leave surfaces not completely dry after cleaning.
