Hello everyone, I have a fairly specific question and hope to benefit from your experience: How can I effectively protect IKEA BESTÅ furniture from water damage in the bathroom?

I plan to use a bathroom cabinet from the BESTÅ series, but I’m unsure how to best protect the wood or surface against moisture and occasional splashes.

What preventive measures would you recommend to ensure the furniture lasts a long time without swelling or damaged edges? Are there special varnishes, sealants, or placement tips?

I understand that the wood is not completely waterproof, but perhaps there are practical solutions that provide at least moisture resistance. Many thanks in advance for your advice!

Additionally, I added rubber feet underneath to prevent moisture from reaching the bottom.

That is a very practical tip! Keeping an object elevated from the ground is always a simple and effective measure.

I have also found it effective to line the area behind and underneath the cabinet with moisture-resistant plastic mats. This prevents water from coming into direct contact with the furniture surfaces and helps to avoid water stains.

Thanks for the tip about feet/raisers! Are there suitable ones from IKEA, or would any kind of rubber feet work?

Also, I’m considering applying two coats of clear varnish to the back panel. Does anyone have experience with how many layers of clear coat are ideal for optimal protection?

I usually apply two thick coats of water-repellent clear varnish. Beforehand, lightly sand the surface and remove all dust thoroughly. Allow sufficient drying time between coats. This noticeably improves protection.
