Hello everyone, I am currently facing the task of removing the countertop from my Ikea Metod base cabinets, preferably without causing any damage. My question is: How do you properly remove the countertop from Ikea Metod cabinets? Specifically, I am interested in which screws or fasteners need to be undone, whether any special tools should be used beforehand, and if there are important details to keep in mind to safely take off the countertop without scratching or damaging it. If anyone has tips from personal experience regarding the removal or preparation, I would be very grateful. Also, any advice on potential pitfalls or commonly overlooked steps would be appreciated.

The cooktop usually needs to be removed, otherwise you won’t be able to take off the countertop. The brackets are often attached from underneath. You can cut through the silicone with a sharp utility knife. A heat gun or hairdryer can help to soften the silicone for easier removal.

Summary for the professional installation of the countertop with Ikea Metod:

- The countertop is screwed to the base cabinets from the inside using brackets.
- Screw type is usually Torx T20 or Phillips, accessible from underneath.
- The cooktop usually needs to be removed, as it is connected to the countertop or secured with clips.
- Silicone joints between countertop and wall should be cut open in advance using a sharp cutter.
- Heat (hairdryer or heat gun on low setting) helps to soften adhered silicone.
- After unscrewing, carefully lift the countertop and tilt it forward.

This ensures minimal damage to the countertop and adjacent components.

One important note: The countertop may also be secured with adhesive in some areas, especially in longer kitchen units. Simply unscrewing might not be enough; in such cases, heating the adhesive points or using a spatula to loosen the countertop can help. Be careful not to damage the surface. Once you’ve freed one corner, proceed systematically, applying gentle upward pressure.

Slowly pry up the countertop from the top side once the screws are loosened. If necessary, gently tap with a rubber mallet to loosen any tightly fixed spots, but be very careful. Small parts such as clips are often hidden, so check all sides as thoroughly as possible.
