Hello everyone,

During our kitchen planning, the question came up whether we want the cooktop integrated or surface-mounted. What advantages do you see for each option? Is it really much more practical when it is recessed? There is also the silicone seal where dirt can accumulate, right?

We want the Neff cooktop with an integrated downdraft extractor. Does anyone have experience with Neff cooktops?

I chose a cooktop that sits on top at Granit. The reason was that I don’t expect to find a replacement cooktop with the exact same dimensions if mine breaks someday. However, with a laminate countertop, this is less of an issue due to the low cost. Still, I would opt for a cooktop that sits on top because of moisture concerns.

Thank you all! We will go with a built-up roof then. Many thanks for the help.

A bit late, but we recently had this discussion here in the forum: a recessed installation also carries the risk that you won’t find a suitable replacement later on, and then you have to replace the entire countertop.

Our kitchen studio said they don’t do this with laminated wood countertops. We would have had to choose a high-quality countertop.

The most important argument in favor of a recessed cooktop, in my opinion, is that pots – and everything else – can be moved across the surface without any step or edge getting in the way.

I have a stainless steel countertop (with particle board underneath) and a recessed Miele cooktop. I filled the gap myself with special silicone, and apart from one minor, insignificant flaw, it’s completely fine. Miele claims to offer the same cooktop sizes for many years to come. Whether that will actually be the case, I don’t know. If not, I can either choose a larger cooktop and adjust the cutout (which should be technically feasible, I think), or place another stainless steel plate on top and then either install the new cooktop on it or fit it in. Not exactly stylish, but definitely doable.

It’s clear that most of these issues don’t occur with a cooktop that sits on top of the countertop. (But then you lose the advantage described in the first sentence of this post.)

The most important advantage of a recessed cooktop, in my view, is that pots—and everything else—can be slid across the surface smoothly, without any step.

The material of the desired countertop speaks against this.

We chose a wood-based countertop with a concrete look (I think it’s laminated, but I’m not sure at the moment).
