ParnevinHello everyone, I am currently facing the task of removing the countertop from my Ikea Metod base cabinets, preferably without causing any damage. My question is: How do you properly remove the countertop from Ikea Metod cabinets? Specifically, I am interested in which screws or fasteners need to be undone, whether any special tools should be used beforehand, and if there are important details to keep in mind to safely take off the countertop without scratching or damaging it. If anyone has tips from personal experience regarding the removal or preparation, I would be very grateful. Also, any advice on potential pitfalls or commonly overlooked steps would be appreciated.
I can easily understand how frustrating it can be when you want to remove the countertop and suddenly realize you don’t know all the fastenings. It wasn’t entirely straightforward for me at first either. An important tip upfront: The Metod countertop is usually attached from underneath with special mounting brackets or screws. First, I would check if the screws under the countertop are accessible; these are typically Torx or Phillips screws. It’s helpful to disconnect the sink or cooktop connections beforehand or at least make sure that no pipes or clips are blocking the countertop. It’s also worth lightly unloading the cabinets below to have more room to move. If the countertop is very tight, a plastic wedge can help gently lift it slightly without damaging it. It’s important not to use excessive force, as this can cause the laminate to warp or crack.

For Ikea Metod cabinets, the countertop is usually securely attached with metal brackets and screws. These brackets are typically screwed from the inside of the base cabinets upwards. I recommend the following step-by-step approach:
- Work with a partner to safely remove the countertop.
- Empty all cabinets completely to get easy access to the brackets and screws.
- Check if silicone or sealant has been applied between the countertop and the wall; carefully loosen this with a utility knife if necessary.
- Locate the fastening screws underneath the countertop: they are often at the rear, and possibly also on the sides.
- Use the appropriate screwdriver or Torx bit to slowly unscrew all screws.
- Be aware that the countertop may still be attached to the wall or adjacent structures.
- After loosening the fastenings, gently lift the countertop and pull it forward. A wide plastic wedge or a thin wooden strip can help to carefully lift the countertop to release the bond.
- Avoid using metal tools as levers to prevent damage to the edges.
Additionally: if the countertop has a reinforcing panel (back panel), detach this beforehand. Depending on the model, there may also be special brackets at the sink that are not immediately visible. Please also check connections such as water and electrical—especially turn off or fully disconnect electric cooktops in advance.

My sink is already removed, but the cooktop is still installed. Do you think it needs to be completely taken out before removing the countertop? Are there any special clips or fasteners in the Ikea Metod system that I should be aware of to avoid accidentally damaging something?
Additionally, I wonder how tight the joints between the countertop and the wall usually are. Do you have to use a lot of force to break the silicone seal, or are there tricks to make it easier, especially if it has been installed for a long time?
