Hello everyone, I have a question about repairing my Ikea Metod countertop. I recently noticed that it has some deeper scratches—probably caused by an unfortunate incident with a sharp knife. Since the countertop is made of laminated chipboard, I’m unsure how to best repair these scratches without leaving noticeable marks or further damaging the surface.

I would like to know which materials or methods are most suitable for repairing the countertop—whether there are special repair kits available, or if simple household items like wood filler, sandpaper, or varnish can be used.

Has anyone had experience with this, especially with this model or similar countertops? What is the best approach to restoring the surface as smoothly and functionally as possible?

I look forward to your tips and step-by-step advice!

Do not sand too aggressively; only remove the roughness around the scratch. It is best to test the color tone with small mixtures until it matches.

Wax stick only adheres to laminate for minor scratches; for deeper damage, it is better to use filler or repair paste.

How much can I sand the surface without completely removing the laminate layer?

Better to be cautious here, as the laminate layer is very thin! Use fine sandpaper very lightly – the countertop should be treated gently, not scrubbed. 🙂

Does anyone have a tip on how to match the color of the repair filler as closely as possible to the wood tone of the Metod panel?

My advice: Try experimenting with small amounts of paint until you get the right match. Sometimes adding a drop of light or dark brown helps, depending on the undertone of the panel. And don’t get discouraged – it’s a bit like painting, but really enjoyable!

Great questions, Duben! Keep in mind that a laminate repair kit usually contains several small pots of color. This way, you can mix the exact shade and even make minor adjustments.

If the scratches are very deep, I recommend using a laminate filler compound, then sanding it finely and sealing it with a waterproof clear varnish. This offers the best long-term protection!

Take your time and work in small steps to avoid unevenness. Soon you’ll have an almost new countertop!!! 💪

Great topic! I also repaired my Metod panel using the tip with repair wax. It’s really important to choose the right color and then polish the repaired area with a microfiber cloth. This makes it almost invisible and smooth to the touch. Definitely give it a try, it’s satisfying!

Thank you all for your helpful tips and suggestions. I think I will try gently sanding around the scratches and then applying a repair kit to match the color as closely as possible. A clear coat finish seems sensible for long-lasting durability.

If the repair isn’t perfect, I can at least make further adjustments—I have learned a lot so far. I will also keep the ideas about using colors and wax sticks in mind.

I’ll be happy to share a follow-up report once I’ve tried it. Thanks again!
