Hello everyone,

I am facing the challenge of assembling my new Ikea Metod kitchen unit properly and am looking for good tips and experiences here. Specifically, I am interested in the following points:

- How can the assembly of the carcasses and fronts be done efficiently and securely?
- What is the recommended order of assembly to avoid alignment issues later on?
- Are there any special tricks to accurately adjust stops, hinges, and drawers?
- Which tools are truly necessary, and which ones can be skipped?

I want to install my kitchen cleanly and ensure it is stable and long-lasting, as I want to enjoy it for many years. I would really appreciate detailed input and personal experiences – including any advice on potential pitfalls during assembly. Thanks in advance!

Hello,

first assemble all the carcasses and make sure to screw them together at a perfect right angle. Use a spirit level. Then clamp the fronts in place and adjust the hinges. For the drawers, ensure the slides are aligned exactly parallel. The most important tools are a cordless drill, spirit level, and screwdriver.

Hello Usgomi,

you’ve already set a good focus. I’ll add a few tips that are often overlooked:

- Start by assembling the main cabinet carcasses. Take your time to align them properly, especially with the first row of cabinets, as all subsequent modules will be aligned to these.
- Use a carpenter’s square to ensure the corners are at 90 degrees.
- For the hinges, always check the adjustment screws before attaching the door fronts, and if needed, start with fine adjustments.
- Work on a level and clean surface whenever possible to avoid scratches and mistakes.
- If you’re working alone, secure the carcasses well to prevent them from tipping over during screwing.

Tool tips:
- A cordless drill with adjustable torque is invaluable.
- A small Phillips screwdriver is helpful for insulation and cover elements.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions; I’m happy to provide more detailed explanations.

That is absolutely correct, but I would also question how to compensate for uneven floors before securing the units. Is it better to adjust the feet directly or use shims?

I find that people often underestimate how much minor deviations can affect the later installation of fronts and shelves.

The tip about using a carpenter’s square is good, but I wonder if other measuring tools or perhaps even a laser level might provide more accuracy here. What do you think? Has anyone had experience with modern measuring devices during Metod assembly?

Using a laser level can be helpful in many situations, but experience generally shows that unevenness in Ikea Metod kitchen units is most effectively corrected using the adjustable plinth feet. Here are some factual points:

- Plinth feet allow easy adjustment for floor unevenness of up to about 15 mm (0.6 inches).
- Shims are possible but usually considered temporary and can lead to instability in the long term.
- A carpenter’s square or a well-equipped try square is essential for checking the angles of the carcasses.
- A laser level offers precision, but it requires a stable surface and may be excessive for DIY enthusiasts.

My advice: Use the adjustable feet and simultaneously check with a good square and a spirit level. Laser tools are optional, but not essential.

Hey Usgomi and everyone else, I’m really glad to see you’re taking such a careful approach! I’ve assembled several Metod kitchens myself and here are a few encouraging tips:

- Don’t be afraid of the hinges! They can be adjusted very precisely, so just experiment a bit – it’s actually fun and gives you a good feeling of progress.
- Important: don’t screw the carcasses in too tightly, or the wood might warp.
- Use the Ikea assembly video if you get stuck; it shows lots of helpful tricks.

You can do this! If you’re unsure about anything, just ask here, we’re happy to help 🙂
