Hello everyone, I recently bought an Ikea Hemnes piece of furniture, specifically a shelf, and after some time I noticed that the screws keep loosening. This seems not only annoying but potentially problematic for stability in the long run. Therefore, my question is: What is the best way to prevent the screws in Ikea Hemnes furniture, especially those with similar wooden dowels and connectors, from loosening over time? I would appreciate tips on proper assembly, possible additional materials, and experiences on how to securely fix this issue long-term.

I’m familiar with this issue and understand how frustrating it can be. Hemnes furniture is often made from solid pine wood, which can expand or contract slightly depending on humidity. This almost always causes the screws to loosen over time.

One method that has worked well for me is tightening the screws again after about two weeks, as the wood needs time to settle. Additionally, I have applied a small amount of wood glue to some of the joints—very sparingly and only on the screw threads. This creates a slight gripping effect.

I know this isn’t ideal for everyone, but it helps make the connections more stable without damaging the furniture. How do you usually deal with this?

Drill holes with screws wrapped in a bit of mounting foam or Teflon tape can help prevent loosening. Otherwise, tighten them periodically.

The long-term behavior of screwed connections in Hemnes and similar solid wood furniture should always take the material properties into account. Pine wood is highly reactive to fluctuations in humidity, which causes swelling and shrinking processes. This mechanically leads to loose connections.

I recommend the following measures:
- Check and tighten all screws again after about 1-2 weeks
- Lightly treat screw connections with assembly retention lacquer (medium strength) before installation
- Use wood glue sparingly on wooden dowels, not on screws
- Maintain a controlled living room climate to minimize strong humidity fluctuations

This is a mechanically and materially sound approach to optimization.

That matches my experience exactly. I also found it quite frustrating, but understanding the moisture issues helped me be more patient. Nowadays, I simply retighten all screws once or twice after the furniture has been standing for a while.

I’m glad to hear that small aids like threadlocker can help. I’ll give that a try next week.

Good morning! I would like to take a step back and share some basic tips for screw fastening with Hemnes furniture:

- Before assembly, make sure all threads are clean and free of dust to prevent premature loosening.
- Use washers if none are included in the kit. They help distribute the load more evenly and prevent screws from loosening.
- As mentioned before, check the screws again after 7 to 14 days and tighten if necessary.
- For a more durable fastening, thread-locking compounds can help, but use medium-strength types so you can still remove the screws later without damaging the wood.

I know some people who lightly dampen the furniture first to allow the wood to settle, then tighten the screws again. It may sound unusual, but it can help reduce tensions somewhat.
