Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I purchased several Ikea Hemnes furniture pieces. Since I am placing them in a room with relatively high humidity—around 65-75%—I am concerned about the durability and protection of the furniture against potential swelling, warping, or mold growth.

My question is: What methods or measures would you recommend to effectively protect Ikea Hemnes furniture, especially in environments with high humidity?

I am interested in approaches for prevention, proper care, and possible sealing techniques that do not affect the natural look of the wood but provide better resistance to moisture.

Are there any experiences with specific varnishes, oils, or other protective products? And what about climate control at the installation site in general?

Looking forward to your tips and the discussion!

Hey BUJU67, very important question! 🙂 Moisture is definitely a critical factor when it comes to wooden furniture – but don’t worry, there are ways to properly protect the HEMNES series!

The best approach is to maintain a consistent indoor humidity level, which can work really well with a dehumidifier, especially during the cooler months. I also always recommend using wood oil – it penetrates deeply and protects the wood from the inside.

Very important: avoid varnishes that fully seal the surface, as they prevent the wood from breathing, which isn’t good over time! So it’s better to use breathable oils instead.

Keep us updated on how you proceed!

Hello BUJU67,

to answer your questions in more detail: The Ikea HEMNES furniture is made of solid pine wood, which naturally reacts to moisture. To prevent damage caused by high humidity, the following points should be considered:

- Indoor climate: Ideally around 40-60% relative humidity. You can optimize this with dehumidifiers or, even better, with controlled ventilation.

- Surface treatment: Breathable wood oils or wax finishes are highly suitable. They protect against moisture without suffocating the wood fibers.

- Avoid aggressive sealing with paint or varnishes, as these can cause long-term damage.

- Proper furniture placement: Do not place directly against exterior walls, ensure good ventilation, and avoid proximity to heat sources.

- Regular inspection: Detect any warping or stains early.

These measures protect your wood and significantly extend the lifespan of the furniture.

I can fully understand how stressful the uncertainty can be with such beautiful furniture like the HEMNES series when you don’t have complete control over the indoor climate.

That advice really helped me as well. I had similar issues and then deliberately started to monitor the indoor climate closely during the first few months. Especially in the damp season, you can quickly notice if the furniture is suffering.

Important: The furniture should not be placed directly next to windows or poorly insulated walls to prevent moisture from penetrating from outside.

Hello everyone,

I would like to share a short guide on how to protect HEMNES furniture in environments with high humidity.

1. Surface preparation:
- Thoroughly clean the furniture to remove dust and grease.
- Lightly sand the surface to improve absorption.

2. Choice of protective treatment:
- Prefer natural wood oils, such as linseed oil or special hard wax oils.
- Avoid synthetic varnishes that seal the pores.

3. Application:
- Apply several thin layers, allowing each to dry properly.
- After oil application, let the furniture dry in fresh air and ensure good room ventilation.

4. Indoor climate:
- Ventilate the room multiple times while avoiding direct airflow on the furniture.
- Use dehumidifiers in particularly damp rooms.

Summary:
- Natural oil treatment provides effective protection.
- Regular maintenance and inspection are important.
- Don’t underestimate climate control at the installation site.

I hope this provides some useful guidance for some of you.

Wood always expands and contracts with changes in humidity. It is important to keep your furniture as consistently dry as possible.

I recommend:
- Regularly ventilating indoor spaces, but avoid placing furniture directly in drafts.
- Using coasters or small spacers under the legs.
- Avoiding direct contact with water.

Oils make the wood more resistant, but they cannot fully protect it from humidity.
