Hello everyone, I am currently planning to improve the ergonomics of my Ikea Metod kitchen unit and am looking for tips and proven strategies to make workflows more comfortable and healthier. Specifically, I am interested in how to best adjust the height of worktops and cabinets to my body height in order to avoid back pain. I would also like to know which storage solutions inside the cabinets are particularly practical for keeping frequently used items easily accessible. Do you have experience with planning workflows such as food preparation, cooking, and cleaning in the most ergonomic way possible? I look forward to your detailed recommendations and maybe even ideas for additional fittings or accessories for the Metod series. Thank you in advance!

I like cooking with a lot of accessories, such as different knives, several frying pans, pots, and also a blender or food processor should be well integrated. This is an important point for the interior design of the base cabinets.
I recommend the following approach for your Ikea Metod kitchen unit:
- For knives, a specially integrated knife block or magnetic strip inside a drawer is ideal, installed securely in an easily accessible location. This way, your knives are safe and within reach.
- Frying pans and pots should preferably be organized in deep pull-out drawers with dividers underneath the cooktop. When choosing Metod drawers, make sure to select those with optimal load capacity and soft-close features, as these items can be quite heavy.
- For the food processor, plan a countertop space or a base cabinet with a flap or lift mechanism to save space and allow you to quickly take the machine out when needed.

Regarding waste separation, I’m unsure whether to separate waste centrally under the sink or to have different bins at several locations. From an ergonomic standpoint, it makes sense to plan waste separation at the main “disposal points” (for example, under the sink for general waste and organic waste). Additional small bins – for paper or plastic – can be useful at the kitchen island or near the preparation area if they are easily accessible and do not disrupt workflow.
It is important that the bins do not get in the way and integrate seamlessly into your routines, so you don’t have to walk long distances while cooking and cleaning up.
