Hello everyone, I am currently planning to repurpose our IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets in a children's room and want to make them as child-friendly and safe as possible. My specific concerns are: How can I make the door and drawer hinges childproof? Are there recommended inserts or organizers that are both easily accessible for small children and safe? Based on experience, which materials and finishes are particularly durable and safe? And how can I prevent the cabinets from tipping over or sliding during play? Does anyone have practical tips or experience with Metod cabinets, especially when used around young children? Thanks in advance for your help and practical advice!
First, securing doors and drawers with magnetic child safety locks is very effective. These prevent accidental opening by small children, are easy to install, and do not damage the furniture. For interior organization, I recommend adjustable shelves combined with custom-sized sorting boxes or plastic containers that are easy to clean. Surfaces should ideally be matte and scratch-resistant to reduce wear. To prevent tipping, it is essential to securely fasten cabinets to the wall. The Metod modules come with mounting hardware that should definitely be used. Alternatively, storing heavy items in the lower sections further increases stability.

I really appreciate that safety is being considered here! In addition to the measures mentioned, we chose handleless designs, meaning no visible handles, to reduce the risk of pinching. We also equipped the cabinets with child-safe soft-close dampers, which make slamming practically impossible and keep fingers safe. A tip: get removable organizers so the child can help independently and stay motivated. This way, the cabinet isn’t just safe but also fun! :-)

I’ve also heard that some safety devices can cause issues with drawers that have soft-close mechanisms. Has anyone experienced this?

I would also like to know if anyone has experience with the feet of Metod. Are they height-adjustable to compensate for uneven floors?
Regarding magnetic child safety locks: models like ABUS Secvest or similar, which are well-documented and tested, are recommended. For Metod, the locks fit well if installed correctly. Issues with soft-close drawers often occur when the lock is too tight or not properly adjusted to the closing mechanism. A slight adjustment usually helps.
Regarding dampers: these can generally be easily retrofitted, for example, so-called soft-close dampers for IKEA furniture. They cushion the closing action and prevent sudden slamming, which is ideal for children's rooms for safety reasons.
Regarding feet: Metod modules have adjustable feet, usually around 2-4 cm (1-1.5 inches), which compensate well for uneven floors. For particularly uneven floors, an additional base or pad might be useful.
