Hello everyone, I am currently planning the layout of my open-plan kitchen and living area and want to integrate the Ikea Metod cabinets seamlessly. Since the Metod system is quite modular and functional, I’m wondering how to incorporate the cabinets visually and practically so they fit well with open living spaces and don’t look like typical kitchen furniture. My goal is to create a smooth transition between the cooking and living zones without the kitchen overpowering the space or appearing too bulky. Perhaps you have tips on color choices, combining with other furniture pieces, or suggestions for room layout to make everything feel cohesive. I’m also interested in any experiences you have with suitable lighting or decoration to emphasize the open-plan character. Thanks in advance!

Do you think it works well to combine Metod high-gloss white fronts with an oak wood countertop when the living area mostly features wood tones as well? That works very well. The high-gloss fronts add freshness and lightness, while the wood countertop brings warmth and a natural feel. To ensure a harmonious transition to the living area, warm wood furniture or at least some wood accents in the living space would be ideal. A rug or cushions in warm tones also help make the space cozy.

I want to avoid the kitchen potentially feeling too sterileThat’s exactly the point – gloss finishes can look sterile if you don’t balance them out. In addition to wood, I would suggest introducing colored decorations or plants. Alternatively, a statement artwork on the wall can visually soften the division and add personality to the kitchen.
And remember to use different textures! A nice basket, soft fabrics, matte dishes – all of these add life to the space. This way, the kitchen doesn’t feel sterile at all, but rather lively and inviting. You create the perfect balance between a modern look and a cozy atmosphere.
Great ideas, thanks! Regarding the island: The room is open but limited in size, and I want to create a work island using Metod units. What’s the best way to manage the appearance so it doesn’t look too bulky? Should it be kept fairly low or would wall cabinets above be better? Are there tried-and-true combinations I should be aware of?
For open kitchen islands, it is advisable to keep the cabinet height relatively low to maintain sightlines and prevent the space from feeling visually divided. Hanging cabinets above the island can quickly compromise the open character. Instead, consider using pendant lights or a subtle ceiling light. Open shelves at the end of the island can also add a sense of lightness.
