Hello everyone, I am planning a project to install several Ikea Metod wall cabinets on a drywall (plasterboard) wall. Since drywall alone is not very load-bearing, I am looking for a simple yet secure method to mount these Metod wall cabinets without having to build extensive support structures or reinforce the entire wall.
My specific question is: How can I securely attach Ikea Metod wall cabinets to drywall so that the cabinets remain stable over time and do not cause damage to the drywall? I would appreciate any tips on suitable anchors, screws, or alternative mounting options!

I understand your concern, labar62. Installing on drywall can be really frustrating, especially because of falling cabinets or cracks. That’s exactly what I’m worried about. Ikea also mentions that their cabinets are not designed for drywall.
How difficult is it to build a wooden ceiling angle support? Are there any simple solutions for this? I had actually hoped to manage without such modifications. However, I might have to consider some form of furring or backing.
A wooden batten in front of drywall is the simplest solution. You can only hang lightweight cabinets directly on drywall. For installation: attach a horizontal wooden strip to the studs using long screws, then hang the Metod cabinet on the wooden batten with the original wall cabinet hooks. This way, the weight is well distributed. Hollow wall anchors alone are not suitable for full load-bearing.
Hi everyone! I completely understand the concerns – I was also worried about everything falling down. For me, using a combination of metal toggle anchors and a wooden board behind the drywall worked really well. It also helps a lot to keep checking during installation that everything is secure and nothing is loose.
Personally, I would rather put in a bit more effort upfront than worry later about the cabinet with plates coming down. I can reassure you: most people who do this properly end up very satisfied with the stability.

Hey labar62, it’s great that you’re giving this so much thought! My advice: definitely use multiple mounting points. I installed my Metod cabinets with 3 large molly bolts per cabinet, plus a wooden batten as a support. That definitely gives you security and isn’t that complicated.
Go for it! With the right preparation, it’s actually quite doable. I always enjoy seeing people try the “scout” methods for drywall and achieve great results!
