rheakarHello everyone,
I recently purchased an Ikea Metod kitchen system and am now facing the challenge of installing the doors correctly so that they fit perfectly and, above all, close quietly. Unfortunately, in my first attempts, I realized that aligning the doors with millimeter precision is not so easy. Besides the correct alignment, it is also important to me that the doors do not slam or squeak but close softly and smoothly.
My question is: What steps should I follow when installing the Ikea Metod doors to ensure a perfect fit and quiet operation? Are there any special tips, for example regarding the hinges or adjustments, that I should definitely know? Any advice on tools or possibly necessary accessories would also be very helpful.
I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Hello rheakar,
to achieve a perfect fit and quiet operation of the Ikea Metod doors, precise adjustment of the hinges is the most important step. Here are some detailed tips:
- To align the doors, use the three adjustment screws on the hinges: vertical adjustment for height, horizontal adjustment for the gap to the cabinet, and depth adjustment, which pulls the door closer to the cabinet.
- Start with the vertical adjustment by roughly positioning the door and fine-tuning the height using the corresponding screw.
- The horizontal adjustment is important to create an even gap between the door and the frame. The goal is for all doors to be flush with no offsets.
- For quiet operation, the hinges should, if possible, be installed with the integrated soft-close feature. Most hinges on Ikea Metod are equipped with soft-close. Check if the damper is working and make sure no dirt or obstacles interfere with the movement.
- Be careful not to tighten the screws too much to ensure smooth, wear-free movement.
- It is best to use a spirit level or a ruler to check the alignment.
Tools you will need: a Phillips screwdriver, possibly a fine Allen wrench, possibly a locking plier, and of course, a calm workspace.
This method ensures a clean result and quiet operation when applied correctly.

I installed my Metod doors last year, and fine-tuning the hinges was really the key point. Tip: Patience is your best friend here. If you take your time and adjust step by step, achieving a perfect fit almost becomes effortless.
And regarding quiet operation, make sure to check the soft-close feature. It not only protects the doors and saves your nerves but also ensures you don’t get startled out of bed at night when someone enters the kitchen 😉.

What I learned is that even a few millimeters of misalignment are immediately noticeable and affect not only the appearance but also how the doors close. If you have children or pets who often open and close the doors, it can be helpful to readjust the hinges after a few weeks. Sometimes the adjustments need time to “settle in.”
I also had problems with squeaky doors initially. After a bit of research, I found that applying some lubricant to the hinge joints works wonders—preferably a silicone-based spray that doesn’t stick or attract dust.

A brief search showed that applying some lubricant to the hinge joints works wonders – preferably a silicone-based spray that is non-sticky and does not attract dust. That’s a good point. Metal hinges in Metod are usually well-lubricated, but over time or with dust buildup, treating them with silicone spray can extend their lifespan and make their operation smoother. Important: Do not use oil or grease that can attract dirt.
Here is a summary of the hinge technology, which is often helpful:
- Before mounting the door on the cabinet, always check that the hinges click into place correctly.
- When screwing in, ensure that the mounting plate is firmly seated and that the screws on the back side of the door are properly aligned.
- After hanging the door, use the adjustment screws, starting with the vertical adjustment, then horizontal, and finally the depth.
Sometimes the cabinets show slight warping – this can be compensated with a suitable shim at the mounting plate. Although this is a special case, it can make the already tricky adjustment easier.
The quiet operation is usually well managed with the standard soft-close system in IKEA Metod. If the doors are still noisy, check that there are no foreign objects between the door and the cabinet.
