Hello everyone,

I urgently need advice on how to secure the doors of my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets so that they don’t warp and remain properly aligned over time. I have already assembled the cabinets and attached the doors according to the instructions, but some doors don’t fit correctly, don’t close properly, and overall it looks unprofessional.

I know that the Metod hinges have small adjustment options, but I just can’t seem to get the doors to fit perfectly. I’m reluctant to use force or overtighten the screws because I’m afraid of causing warping.

Does anyone have experience with long-term stable mounting of Metod doors? Are there any tricks to keep in mind during installation to avoid warping and misalignment? I would also appreciate tips on whether special tools, aids, or a different installation sequence can help.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

The hinges on the Metod doors have three adjustment screws: for depth, height, and lateral alignment.

If the doors are sagging, simply adjust the height using the screw in the hinge. When tightening the screws firmly, be careful not to overtighten to avoid damaging the material.

Proceed step by step and install the doors with slight tension – not too tight. This prevents distortion.

Exactly, and especially with Ikea Metod I find: patience is key! 🙂

I always take my time to make small adjustments back and forth instead of trying to screw everything together quickly. Also, a small carpenter’s square or ruler can help to keep the gaps even. For me, it also helped to loosely attach the doors first, try them multiple times, and only fully tighten them at the very end.

Always make sure to align the hinges parallel to each other – that often makes the difference. Good luck!

Thanks for your initial feedback!

For clarity: I didn’t tighten the doors too much and checked several times to ensure all hinges were properly aligned. Still, they warped over time. My guess is that the weight of the doors plus the stress from opening and closing gradually puts small strain on the attachment points, promoting deformation.

Is there maybe a way to better distribute the load? For example, additional screws or special shims behind the hinges? Or suitable dowels in the cabinet carcass?

I’m also interested in how you handle possible unevenness in walls or floors, since that can affect the door positioning, especially with a single cabinet.

Hello Georgina,

your considerations are good, because the door mounting on Ikea Metod is actually designed to be somewhat flexible to compensate for minor irregularities.

- Additional screws are generally not recommended by the manufacturer, as the hinges are meant to be installed exactly at predetermined points. However, if you want extra stability, a small insert made of plastic or wood placed behind the hinges can help provide a more secure hold.
- Also, check whether the screw holes in the cabinet frame have become slightly worn. If so, wood filler or special repair kits for filling and resetting the screws often work well.
- If the floor is uneven, this can indeed cause problems with freestanding cabinets. Try using adjustable furniture feet or shim the base with washers underneath.

It is really important to carefully check all height and lateral alignments by adjusting the hinges before finally tightening the doors. Using a spirit level and a small square often pays off.

I always do it this way: First, attach the hinges to the doors, then loosely hang the doors on the cabinet body and adjust them gradually.

Good to know: With Metod hinges, the adjustment screws are designed to compensate for slight warping.

And: If a door is severely warped, a misaligned cabinet body could also be the cause. In that case, only proper alignment of the cabinet body before installation helps.
