Hello everyone, I recently bought an IKEA BESTÅ shelving unit and now want to expand it with additional shelves or ideally drawers. My main question is: How can the BESTÅ system be modularly expanded if you don’t only use the standard cabinet boxes? Are there proven solutions or recommended accessories that allow you to add shelves afterward or complement the system with drawers without affecting stability or appearance? I have done some research but am unsure whether, for example, the interior with drawer systems from other IKEA series is compatible or if special adapters are required. Any tips are greatly appreciated!

The drawer sets for BESTÅ come in different depths, depending on the depth of the carcass. The system is designed to be quite flexible to accommodate various dimensions. However, it is important that the rails and mounting points fit precisely to ensure smooth operation. If your measurement falls outside the standard range, it may be necessary to make adjustments, such as using wood panel inserts or special brackets. For shelving compartments, shelves with adjustable spacers are recommended.

Regarding stability: If you want to extensively expand your BESTÅ, I would recommend checking the frame connections in addition to the IKEA solution. For example, metal angle brackets can be used inside for additional support. I also recommend IKEA’s drawer systems, as they are specifically designed and tested for BESTÅ – DIY solutions often look untidy and can cause issues over time.

For my BESTÅ extension, I simply bought additional cabinet modules and connected them using connectors. To add more shelves, I installed shelves inside each cabinet. Installing drawers only works with the original set – anything else often becomes unstable or doesn’t fit properly. It has been working flawlessly for me for 2 years.

There are also felt pads or washers that can be attached to the rails if the drawers are jerking. This makes using the BESTÅ system even more comfortable.

The drawer systems from IKEA for BESTÅ work well, but stability issues can occur if they are overloaded or mounted unevenly.

Thanks for the important note! Could you briefly explain how I can tell if my BESTÅ shelving unit needs reinforcement or what the general guideline is for maximum load? Also, whether additional braces might be advisable? I want to address this early enough to prevent the extension from becoming a safety risk.
