Hello everyone, I have a question that’s really bothering me about my IKEA BESTÅ drawers: Is there a way to make these specific BESTÅ drawers quieter? Specifically, I’m referring to the slight but often disruptive clicking and snapping sound that occurs when these drawers close – even when you close them gently. I’ve already tried lubricating the drawer slides, but the result was only mediocre and only partially reduced the issue. It would be great if someone here in the forum has experience or practical tips on how to significantly reduce the noise when closing BESTÅ drawers without compromising their functionality or stability. Thanks in advance!
I can clearly understand the original question, as the loud slamming of IKEA BESTÅ drawers is a well-known issue, especially due to the plastic runners and the frame stops that make up the closing mechanism. I have taken apart several of these drawers and tried to minimize the noise. Here is my detailed advice:
- Check the runners: These are often made of plastic and can be susceptible to stresses that cause noise. Sometimes they are slightly warped or have small dirt particles that increase the slamming sound.
- Careful maintenance with a high-quality silicone spray definitely helps, but you should apply it very sparingly to avoid attracting dust.
- Another point: The plastic stops, usually small bumpers or end caps, can sometimes be carefully covered with a thin felt pad. This reduces the hard impact. However, be careful not to impair their functionality.
- It’s also worth checking and slightly tightening the screws of the runners, as loose parts can vibrate and amplify noise.
It would also be helpful to know how old the drawers are and how frequently they are used. Wear and tear often affects the noise level.

Thanks for the tips so far! @Dilen, the drawers are about two years old and used daily, so just normal wear and tear. Your idea to attach felt pads to the stops sounds interesting, but I’m worried they might be too thick and cause the drawer not to close fully or to stick. Has anyone had experience with the right thickness or material? @Farmo, how exactly do you place the felt gliders? Inside on the sides of the drawer or on the cabinet frame? I’m unsure if this really reduces the typical clicking noise when closing or rather the squeaking on the runners.
