Hello everyone,

I recently installed some Ikea Metod drawers, but I’m disappointed with the noise when opening and closing them. What bothers me most are the rattling sounds that occur when operating the drawers – especially annoying in the mornings. I suspect it’s related to the runners or the drawer materials.

What specific measures or improvements do you know to make Ikea Metod drawers quieter? Are there particular dampers, alternative slides/runners, silicone pads, or lubricants that noticeably reduce the noise level? Or do you have experience with simple tricks that help muffle the sounds?

I would appreciate tips that provide long-term and practical solutions.

To prevent disturbing noises in Ikea Metod drawers, I recommend the following measures:

- Install soft-close mechanisms if they are not already present.
- Use Teflon sprays or dry lubricants on the rails to reduce friction pressure.
- Attach thin felt or foam rubber strips to contact surfaces to dampen sound.
- Ensure the drawers are precisely aligned and installed, as misaligned guides increase noise levels.

These measures help both mechanically and acoustically.

I simply checked the smoothness of the guide rails and applied some PTFE spray. That already makes it significantly quieter. Additionally, silicone buffers at the ends of the drawers help as well.

For clarification: Standard metal rails are mechanically sturdy; noise usually results from a lack of damping or contamination.

It has been technically proven that a clean, grease-free lubrication using dry lubricants (e.g., PTFE-based) reduces friction without attracting dust. This contributes to lower noise levels over time.

Additionally, rubber buffers at the stops are beneficial as they absorb kinetic energy—similar to shock absorbers in automotive engineering.

Recommendation: Do not simply lubricate with grease to avoid damage.

Thanks for the tips so far!

One question: Is there a difference between the damper sets from Ikea itself and those from third-party suppliers? I’ve read that some retrofit solutions might work better, but I’m unsure about quality and fit.

Does anyone have experience with this? Also, I’m curious whether padding materials like felt should be applied before or after installing the dampers?

Ikea’s own soft-close dampers are precisely designed for the Metod system, making installation very straightforward. Third-party suppliers sometimes offer cheaper alternatives or versions with enhanced damping, but fit and quality can vary.

It is advisable to check reviews and detailed product descriptions. Generally, the Ikea version is recommended if ease of installation and compatibility are priorities.

The padding should be applied after installing the dampers to ensure nothing hinders the mechanism.

I used the Ikea dampers some time ago and was satisfied. The retrofit boxes fit precisely, and the drawer closing feels much smoother since then. Regarding the padding, I can confirm that it should only be applied to the problematic contact points after installing the dampers.

Sometimes patience is needed until everything fits perfectly. But it’s worth it to significantly reduce the noise level.
