Hello everyone, I recently bought an IKEA BESTÅ shelving unit and now want to expand it with additional shelves or ideally drawers. My main question is: How can the BESTÅ system be modularly expanded if you don’t only use the standard cabinet boxes? Are there proven solutions or recommended accessories that allow you to add shelves afterward or complement the system with drawers without affecting stability or appearance? I have done some research but am unsure whether, for example, the interior with drawer systems from other IKEA series is compatible or if special adapters are required. Any tips are greatly appreciated!

Hello, you can easily add extra shelves with the appropriate inserts from IKEA, for example, the shelves for BESTÅ. For drawers, it’s worth checking out the special drawer sets from IKEA designed specifically for BESTÅ, as other series are usually not compatible.

Hey Cory37, I also upgraded my BESTÅ a bit. A small tip: IKEA now offers a good range of drawer fronts and drawer systems that fit BESTÅ perfectly. Just install the designated rails on the inside of the carcasses and slide the drawers in – it holds very well and looks really stylish. 🛠️ For the shelves, you can use the adjustable shelf boards, giving you full flexibility. And don’t worry, the look stays clean and modern, typical IKEA style.

I believe it is important to critically assess whether the proposed solutions are truly suitable for every type of extension. IKEA’s drawer systems for BESTÅ work well in general, but problems with stability can occur if they are heavily loaded or installed unevenly. My advice would be: before adding more shelves or drawers, make sure the basic frame is reinforced accordingly or, if necessary, additional side panels are used. Otherwise, the overall stability may suffer, which can be frustrating in the long run.

You can also consider compatible third-party accessories if you want to expand the range of IKEA parts. Sometimes adapters or flexible shelf inserts are a solution if you are unsure about standard components. However, these are less often perfectly designed for BESTÅ, as IKEA uses its own mounting system.

A question regarding this: Are these drawer sets for BESTÅ available in different depths, or are they limited to a standard depth? I’m asking because my shelving unit has somewhat unusual dimensions, and I’d prefer not to have to cut or modify it extensively.
