Hello everyone, I recently ordered the Ikea Metod kitchen base cabinets and now want to attach the doors myself using the soft-close hinges. I understand that the hinges are first mounted on the cabinet frame and then the doors are hung, but I’m still having some trouble with the precise and simple procedure. I’m especially interested in how to best align the doors so that the soft-close function works optimally and the doors don’t scrape or get stuck later on. Is there a straightforward step-by-step guide or any tips you could recommend? I’m looking forward to your advice!

If I notice the door is crooked after hanging it, do you have a tip on whether I should adjust the vertical or horizontal screw first?

As a general rule, it is best to start with the vertical adjustment first – meaning the screw that changes the door’s height. Often, the issue is that the door is not perfectly level. Use the horizontal adjustments to fine-tune the gap between the door and the cabinet frame. The screws usually allow about 3–5 mm (0.1–0.2 inches) of movement per axis, depending on the hinge, which is sufficient for precise adjustments. It is advisable to make small incremental changes to avoid affecting the soft-close function.

Another tip: To align the doors precisely, it is advisable to first loosely attach all the hinges, then position the door, and finally tighten the screws gradually. This prevents the doors from being under tension, which could later cause deformation. Especially with soft-close hinges, even pressure is important to ensure the damping works correctly. If you take your time adjusting, you are unlikely to make mistakes.

Thanks for the tips so far! I have mostly installed the doors by now, but with one door, I notice it slightly jams when closing, and the soft-close function sometimes engages too abruptly. Has anyone experienced this before? Can this be fixed by adjusting the depth setting, or is it more likely due to an incorrectly installed hinge? I would appreciate any advice, as I’d prefer not to uninstall the entire door again.
