jensparHello everyone, I recently ordered the Ikea Metod kitchen base cabinets and now want to attach the doors myself using the soft-close hinges. I understand that the hinges are first mounted on the cabinet frame and then the doors are hung, but I’m still having some trouble with the precise and simple procedure. I’m especially interested in how to best align the doors so that the soft-close function works optimally and the doors don’t scrape or get stuck later on. Is there a straightforward step-by-step guide or any tips you could recommend? I’m looking forward to your advice!
The installation of Ikea Metod doors with soft-close hinges follows a specific procedure. First, attach the hinges to the cabinet carcass, not the door, to ensure precise positioning. With soft-close hinges, it is important that the damping mechanism is not obstructed, so pay attention to the correct alignment. Adjustments are made along three axes:
- Horizontal (left/right): for positioning the door edge
- Vertical (up/down): for aligning the door at eye level
- Depth (in/out): to ensure the door closes flush
The soft-close function is activated by properly hanging the door. Adjustments are made using small screws on the hinge. It is recommended to loosely attach all hinges first, hang the doors, and then make fine adjustments step by step. This helps prevent misalignment and rubbing.

If applicable, you should set the gap between the front edge of the cabinet and the door evenly. A small tip: use a spirit level or a measuring gauge during installation to ensure everything is perfectly aligned. A calm and focused environment greatly helps to achieve the necessary precision. If the doors make noise when closing, this could also be due to a hinge that is too tightly fastened.
Great that you want to get the soft-close mechanism right! 🙂 A little tip from me: if you lift the doors slightly when hanging them and then hook them in slowly, they will slide smoothly into the hinges. After that, carefully adjust the side screws until the alignment is perfect. When everything fits, closing the doors is really satisfying! Good luck, you can definitely do it!

If I notice the door is crooked after hanging it, do you have any advice on whether I should adjust the vertical or horizontal screw first? And how much adjustment range do the screws generally allow? Is it quite significant or just very slight?
