LesinHello everyone,
I recently bought an Ikea PAX wardrobe and am now facing the task of customizing the interior as much as possible. My goal is to make the best use of the available space so that both clothing and accessories can be stored efficiently and compactly.
I am especially interested in which components or modules you use to make the interior functional yet flexible. For example, how do you plan the layout of shelves, drawers, and hanging rods? Do you also use external organizers or clever tricks for better organization?
Furthermore, I would like to know what you consider when choosing the elements – is stability more important than flexibility? Which dimensions or depths work best? And how do you possibly integrate lighting or other extras?
I look forward to detailed tips, preferably with practical experience regarding handling and assembly! Thank you in advance.

I highly recommend using Ikea’s Pax planner if you haven’t tried it yet. It lets you easily experiment with different combinations and see how they’ll look in the wardrobe in real time.
What I love are the drawer organizers with compartments – they keep everything much tidier and help you find your things faster! And trust me, having a mix of hanging rods, one up high for shirts and one lower down for pants, is invaluable!
A tip: Use baskets or boxes as well, they add variety and give you flexibility if you need to quickly repack items. The Pax components are really sturdy, so don’t worry about heavy clothes!
And keep in mind, depending on the depth of your Pax (usually 58 cm (23 inches) or 35 cm (14 inches)), you can either take advantage of the deeper option for hanging clothes or use the shallower version well for shelves or drawers. Keep at it, it’s going to turn out great!!!

Hello Lesin,
Your question is very well put and shows that you have already thought this through quite a bit. To cover the basics: Ikea Pax offers a wide range of interior options, including shelves, clothes rails, drawers, and accessories like cabinet inserts.
For planning, I always recommend first analyzing your personal space requirements. Ask yourself:
- How many clothes need to be hung, and how many folded?
- Do you need a lot of storage space for shoes or accessories?
- Do you want quick access, or are you planning for tidy shelves?
Then you can combine:
- Clothes rails at different heights to accommodate both short and long garments
- Drawers with and without dividers for socks, scarves, jewelry
- Shelves arranged flexibly for bags, hats, or even boxes
Lighting is a great addition: LED strips are practical and easy to retrofit, especially if you have dark rooms.
It is also important to consider the load capacity of the shelves—be mindful if storing heavy shoes or boxes.
Not to forget: Ikea also offers the accessories online if you want to add components later.
I hope this gives you a good impression and success with your redesign!

It’s always the same story—you buy a wardrobe and then piece together the interior, which often amounts to just another bin for even more stuff.
Why not go straight for custom-made wardrobes if you really want a tailored interior? Why keep juggling drawers and hanging rails that are designed for standard dimensions?
That said, anyone who’s fascinated by the system—whether it’s Pax or other series—is of course welcome to share their ideas! I just think sometimes it’s better to declutter the wardrobe and think minimalist, rather than getting lost in details.
What do you think?
