Hello everyone, I am currently considering how to efficiently integrate my home office workspace into an Ikea Pax wardrobe. I am especially interested in which interior fittings of the Pax system are best suited to create a neat and functional work area.
I imagine needing storage space for folders, technology (laptop, docking station, cable management), as well as room for a small pull-out desk or at least a work surface.
Does anyone have experience or recommendations on which Pax interior fittings work particularly well for this purpose? What dimensions and combinations of shelves, drawers, units, or clothing rails are most practical? And are there any tips for good internal organization that are particularly useful for a home office?
I look forward to your constructive contributions!

Since you have a 100 cm (39 inch) wide Pax wardrobe, I recommend using a flat drawer at the bottom as the main work surface, which can serve as a pull-out shelf. Ikea offers Komplement drawers that can easily be repurposed as sliding platforms.
Alternatively, you can experiment with a narrow, extendable board mounted on the sides. There are also third-party accessories designed specifically for these purposes.
Another useful addition is adjustable shelves, allowing you to organize differently sized items such as binders and other objects. For ergonomic home office work, make sure to consider cable management and sufficient lighting; LEDs with motion sensors installed inside the Pax are very practical in this regard.

I would like to add that when setting up the interior of the Pax wardrobe for a home office, ergonomics should not be overlooked.
A few thoughts on this:
- The height of the pull-out work surface should be designed to allow a comfortable sitting position (around 70-75 cm (28-30 inches) from the floor)
- Ventilation: Electronic devices need airflow to prevent overheating, especially if a laptop and docking station are stored inside the closed wardrobe
- Built-in lighting: Adjustable LED strips are recommended, as they provide a shadow-free workspace
- Cable management: Cable channels or specialized ducts to bundle cables help keep the workspace tidy
Why on earth doesn’t Ikea offer more prefabricated solutions for this? The Pax would be ideal for a home office if there were smart modules available. Question for the thread starter: How much storage space do you want for office supplies versus archive space for files?

Question for the thread starter: How much storage space do you want to allocate for office supplies compared to archive space for folders?Good question, kaubi. My goal is a balanced ratio, as I use both areas. Currently, I estimate that about 60% of the storage will be needed for files, folders, and documents, with the remaining 40% for accessories, electronics, office supplies, and small items.
A flexible solution with adjustable shelves and drawers therefore sounds practical. I also want to avoid having to rebuild the cabinet if the usage changes.
Edit: By the way, how stable are the shelves in the Pax system when placing somewhat heavier folders on them?

By the way, how stable are the shelves inside the Pax when placing heavier binders on them? The shelves in the Pax are generally designed for moderate loads, typically up to 15–20 kg (33–44 lbs) per shelf. If you plan to place heavier items, it is advisable to use additional supports or stronger shelves.
In a home office context, standard binders and equipment are usually not an issue. However, if you have a large number of heavy files, it is best to consider using two shelves side by side or additional supports to prevent sagging.
Conclusion from my perspective: For a home office, a combination of adjustable shelves, multiple drawers, and cable management is essential in the Ikea Pax system.
- Pull-out work surfaces are rare but can be substituted with Komplement drawers
- Cable grommets need to be installed or retrofitted by yourself
- Storage space should be planned to comfortably accommodate both folders and technology
If you plan with this combination, you will be well prepared for typical home office requirements.
