Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to rearrange my living space and am considering using Ikea Pax wardrobes as room dividers. I am wondering how to best use these wardrobes not only to visually separate areas but also to functionally divide rooms in a practical way. It is important to me to know how to safely install the wardrobes, whether they should be securely anchored to the wall, and how to possibly design them so that they can be easily accessed from both sides.

I am also interested in your experiences with structural stability, especially when placing the wardrobes in the middle of the room without leaning them against a wall. Is it worthwhile to combine individual units, or is it better to use complete modules?

I would appreciate any tips on fastening options, ideas for room layout, and suggestions for interior design (such as shelving, doors, lighting).

What are your experiences? Are there any particular tricks you would recommend for optimizing the use of Ikea Pax wardrobes as room dividers?

I have mixed ideas about this. On the one hand, I would prefer doors that can be opened from both sides for safety reasons. Is there a practical solution to design doors so they can be opened from both sides, or at least to have access from both sides easily?

That’s a good question. Ikea Pax doors are usually designed to open only in one direction. There is no option for a door leaf that opens from both sides.

What you can do:

- Completely remove the back panels between the cabinets: this way, the side is essentially open and becomes a double-sided unit.
- On the cabinet side where you want doors, install doors – on the opposite side, have open shelves.
- A clever option is to use double doors at the ends of individual modules, but this is only possible on the outermost cabinet sides.

Alternatively, if double-sided door access is important, you could consider sliding doors, although this is not part of the standard Pax range.

Important note: doors on opposite sides can only be installed if the cabinet carcass is designed for double-sided use, meaning it has no back panel or uses a special back panel solution.

I hope this clarifies some points! I’m happy to provide more information if needed.

Thanks again to everyone for the previous responses; they already give me a pretty good idea!

For additional safety and stability:

I am considering installing metal brackets inside to connect the cabinets and possibly adding a crossbar at eye level to make the structure more rigid.

Alternatively, fastening to the ceiling or floor is an option.

Fastening to the ceiling is not possible in my apartment; floor fastening might help—I will check if and how I can make that work.

Regarding the design, it will probably be a combination: doors on one side and open shelves on the other to allow easy access while still visually dividing the space pleasantly.

Does anyone have experience with lighting in Pax wardrobe room dividers? How reliable are the LED strips, and how do you manage the power supply discreetly when the cabinet is placed in the middle of the room?

Regarding lighting: LED strips are very reliable, durable, and provide pleasant light. You should make sure they are dimmable to allow flexible mood lighting.

It is important to plan the power supply carefully. For freestanding wardrobes in the room, these options work well:

- Cable channels along the baseboard to discreetly route the cable to the nearest power outlet.
- Power strips with flat plugs that can be hidden behind or under the wardrobe.
- If needed, a grounded extension cord can be used, provided it is installed safely.

For installation, it helps to use LED strips with self-adhesive backing or clips and place them into the cabinet grooves.

One more tip: ensure strain relief on the cables to keep the connection stable.

Happy to share more tips if you like.
