AmarboHello everyone,
I want to create a flexible storage solution specifically for the office using my Ikea BESTÅ system. My goal is to combine storage for file folders, workspace materials, and a few open compartments for quick access. At the same time, the solution should remain as adaptable as possible so I can easily rearrange or expand the compartments when needed.
Does anyone have experience or tips on how to best use BESTÅ to create this kind of flexible office storage? I am especially interested in which internal fittings or accessories have proven useful, whether modular combinations make sense, and what to consider during the planning stage.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

I’m especially interested in which internal fittings or accessories have proven useful, whether modular combinations make sense, and what to consider during planning.Hi, I can relate well because I also wanted a flexible, practical solution with BESTÅ in my home office. What initially made me hesitant was that the units are mainly designed for living spaces, like TV furniture. However, I had good results when I combined the compartments with different internal fittings – drawers for small items, file holders, and open shelves for things I use frequently.
What I like most is that you gain real versatility by adding extra shelves and sliding doors. Sliding doors are especially helpful when space is limited – you can quickly access the contents without needing room in front of the unit.
It makes sense to start by carefully considering which materials you use and how often. This usage then influences the choice of internal fittings. So, the modularity is definitely an advantage, even though the basic units themselves are somewhat rigid in structure.
Has anyone here used caster bases with BESTÅ? I’m thinking about whether mobile bases make sense for added flexibility.

I highly recommend adding casters if you plan to move the storage frequently! Nothing feels better than being able to easily roll a cabinet around, especially if you want to reconfigure the room or quickly access the cable clutter behind your PC.
I also used different colored boxes and folders to make everything easier and faster to find. And I replaced some doors with wire baskets – great for loose items like cables or chargers.
So: yes! Casters and colorful boxes really make it fun and make everyday life much easier! 😃
Good luck with your DIY!

Does anyone have experience or tips on the best way to use BESTÅ to create a flexible office storage solution? I’m especially interested in which internal inserts or accessories have proven useful, whether modular combinations make sense, and what to consider during planning. For flexible design with BESTÅ for office storage, I recommend the following points:
- Internal inserts: BESTÅ organizers, especially drawer inserts and shelf dividers, help create clear organization.
- Compartment size: Adjust module sizes to fit commonly used folder formats (e.g., 40x40 cm (16x16 inches)).
- Doors or open compartments: Doors protect against dust, while open compartments allow quick access.
- Expandability: Plan with stacking or extension modules to adapt the setup later.
- Casters: Use only if necessary, as mobility is rarely essential in an office; prioritize safety and stability.
These combinations are reliable, practical, and durable. Although the system isn’t specifically designed for office equipment, it offers many options with accessories.

Storage should also provide good ventilation, particularly when electronic devices are stored. This can be achieved with perforated back panels or open compartments.
Regarding flexibility, I suggest:
- Combining different heights of BESTÅ components
- Using inserts that can be easily removed or repositioned
- Sliding doors if space is limited
This way, you can create flexible yet functional office storage.
