Hello everyone,

I would like to convert my Ikea BESTÅ system specifically into storage for tools and am looking for tips on the best way to do this. I have the basic model with several compartments and doors, but I want to make it more functional so that I can store screwdrivers, pliers, drill bits, and other tools neatly, organized, and easily accessible. Ideally, there would be options to keep different types of tools clearly arranged and maybe even removable modules or additional dividers.

Are there any recommendations on how to get the most out of this system? Inserts, hooks, custom-made compartments are all possibilities – but general experiences with stability when storing heavier tools would also be helpful.

I look forward to your suggestions!

That’s a really good plan, as the BESTÅ modules offer a solid foundation thanks to their simple design and sturdy construction.

My advice: get suitable drawer inserts made of wood or plastic that you can cut to fit the exact interior dimensions of the compartments. This way, you can separate tool sets or individual items without them getting jumbled together. For hammers, pliers, or bulkier tools, sturdy hooks or magnetic strips mounted inside the doors work well.

It’s important to keep an eye on the shelf load capacity – smaller tools are usually fine, but for heavier equipment you might need to reinforce with additional brackets or supports.

Besides that, I would use measuring tapes and customize the inserts individually to avoid wasting any space.

If you want, I can also post a step-by-step guide on how I approached my modification.

Magnetic strips are really great for tools – they prevent the annoying search and turn it almost into a small workshop right in your living room! 😄

A nice addition to inserts or drawers is working on different levels with small boxes. This way, screws, nails, and similar items can be sorted perfectly, avoiding any mess.

And for the more creative: if you enjoy some DIY, simple wooden crates or self-folded compartments made from sturdy cardboard can offer flexibility before moving on to more expensive solutions.

I tried this once with my BESTÅ for fishing gear – it works great and looks stylish.

The important thing is to arrange everything so that you can always easily access the tools you use most often.

The BESTÅ series is primarily designed for living spaces and light storage purposes, not for heavy tools. To ensure stability when storing tools, I recommend the following:

- Reinforce the shelves with additional metal brackets to prevent sagging.
- Use high-quality, custom-made inserts, such as foam with tool cutouts, to combine organization and protection.
- Mount sturdy metal hooks or hangers on the inside of the doors to keep frequently used tools within easy reach.
- Consider moisture protection, as tools can be prone to rust—use dehumidifiers or oil-soaked cloths if necessary.

For organization, I suggest a systematic approach: first, take inventory of all tools and form categories, then look for practical storage solutions.

Based on this, the combination of custom-made inserts and door-mounted hangers is the most effective option, optimally balancing order, stability, and accessibility.
