Hello everyone,

I’m planning to carry out a repair on my Billy bookshelf, mainly because some of the shelf supports have broken off, and I want to make the frame more stable. However, I’m unsure which tools are best suited for the repair to improve the stability while preserving the original design as much as possible.

Specifically, I’m interested in which types of screws and fasteners are recommended, whether special drill bits are needed for the material, and if there are mechanical aids that help to fit the shelves better.

Additionally, I would appreciate advice on how to carefully dismantle the unit without damaging the wood.

So, which tools are helpful for repairing BILLY bookshelves? I look forward to your experiences and tips!

For BILLY, use a Phillips screwdriver and a cordless drill. Small wood drill bits are useful for making pilot holes and preventing wood splitting.

Hello deo-claris,

for repairing the BILLY shelf, I recommend having a Phillips screwdriver, a cordless drill, and a set of wood drill bits in various sizes ready. This makes it easier to insert new screws and prevents the wood from splitting.

Especially when dismantling, proceed slowly and carefully to avoid chipping the edges. For stronger joints, you can also use a light wood glue and avoid tightening the screws too much.

Based on my research and experience, the best approach for repairing the BILLY shelf involves using a combination of the following tools:

1. Cordless drill with adjustable torque control to prevent over-tightening the screws.
2. Phillips screwdriver bit (PH2), as this is the standard used by IKEA.
3. Wood drill bit in the range of 3-4 mm (0.12-0.16 inches) for pre-drilling holes matched to the screw thickness.
4. Possibly a small hammer and a plastic wood wedge to repair damaged holes.

Additionally, I recommend using wooden dowels if you want to reuse old screw holes. The combination of pre-drilling, screwing, and gluing provides good stability.

A brief guide on the procedure:

1. Disassembly:
- Carefully loosen shelf boards using a rubber mallet to avoid damaging the edges.
- Remove screws with the appropriate bit set.

2. Preparation:
- Fill old screw holes with wooden dowels.
- Pre-drill holes for new screws using a suitable wood drill bit.

3. Assembly:
- Slowly drive in screws with a cordless screwdriver set to low torque.
- Optional: Apply wood glue before screwing.

4. Stability:
- Consider adding metal brackets to the sides for reinforcement.

This way, you avoid damage and achieve a secure connection.

Thanks for the tips so far!

One more question: I have read that you need to be especially careful with BILLY shelves made of particleboard because the edges tend to tear easily. Is it worth using special edge cutters or similar tools for the pilot holes, or is a standard wood drill bit sufficient?

Are there any tricks to countersink the screws securely and cleanly without causing the material to chip?
