Good morning everyone, I have matte fronts from the IKEA METOD system and I am looking for a cleaning method that cleans these fronts in an environmentally friendly and gentle way.

Since matte surfaces often react sensitively to harsh cleaners or excessive water, I want to avoid any loss of the matte finish’s appearance or damage to the fronts caused by chemical substances or mechanical treatment.

I am particularly interested in mild products you can recommend that are free from solvents or harsh chemicals—preferably home remedies or ecological cleaning approaches.

Are there any specific tips for application and for preventing water spots or residue? I also try to avoid spending a lot of time on polishing or extensive drying.

I would really appreciate your experiences and suggestions!

Hello Chento,

Your question is very well formulated and important, as matte surfaces are indeed sensitive to damage caused by improper care.

Basically, I recommend a cleaning routine with the following points:
- Important: Use lukewarm water with a mild soap solution, for example a few drops of a gentle dish detergent or an eco-friendly plant-based soap.
- Avoid abrasive sponges; instead, use soft, lint-free cloths or microfiber.
- Do not clean with too much water, only slightly damp to prevent water spots.
- If water spots appear, it’s best to immediately wipe them dry with a soft, dry cloth.

Avoid aggressive cleaners as well as alcohol or ammonia, as these can damage matte surfaces. In many cases, lukewarm soapy water is sufficient to gently remove dust and fingerprints.

If you want, I can also provide a simple recipe for a homemade cleaning spray with citric acid and water, which is mild and eco-friendly.

This is a key point. Matte finishes cannot tolerate harsh solvents, as they may dissolve or alter the matte protective layer.

I would also recommend:
- Always wipe in the direction of the grain or lines of the surface for cleaning.
- Avoid high humidity or excessive moisture on the surfaces to prevent material swelling.
- If possible, allow the surface to dry thoroughly after washing to avoid lime scale stains.

Additionally, a microfiber cloth is best suited, as it effectively removes dirt without sanding or scratching.

A tip: For light grease, a mild solution of vinegar and water (1 part vinegar, 3 parts water) can be helpful occasionally, but use it sparingly, especially on sensitive surface coatings.

For my matte Metod fronts, I use:
- Mild dish soap in warm water
- Soft cloth, well wrung out
- Immediately afterward, wipe again with a dry cotton cloth

I don’t do anything more to keep the surface matte and clean.

Good morning everyone,

I would like to add a brief step-by-step guide for cleaning matte IKEA METOD fronts, which I recommend and is environmentally friendly:

1. Preparation: Have a clean microfiber cloth ready and prepare a mild cleaning solution (1 drop of natural dish soap in about 1 liter (1 quart) of lukewarm water).

2. Application: Wring the cloth well so that it is damp but not wet. Excess water can cause damage.

3. Cleaning: Wipe the front in gentle, even movements without rubbing too hard.

4. Drying: Immediately dry the surface with a dry microfiber cloth to prevent water spots.

5. For stubborn stains, a little lemon juice can help, but please test it first on an inconspicuous area.

If you want more details about the solution or alternatives, feel free to ask.

I would not recommend using vinegar-based cleaners on matte surfaces, as they can damage the surface coating.

Better: warm soapy water, a soft cloth, and dry wipe afterwards.
