Good morning everyone, I have matte fronts from the IKEA METOD system and I am looking for a cleaning method that cleans these fronts in an environmentally friendly and gentle way.

Since matte surfaces often react sensitively to harsh cleaners or excessive water, I want to avoid any loss of the matte finish’s appearance or damage to the fronts caused by chemical substances or mechanical treatment.

I am particularly interested in mild products you can recommend that are free from solvents or harsh chemicals—preferably home remedies or ecological cleaning approaches.

Are there any specific tips for application and for preventing water spots or residue? I also try to avoid spending a lot of time on polishing or extensive drying.

I would really appreciate your experiences and suggestions!

In addition to the methods mentioned so far, I would like to emphasize the following from a materials science perspective:

- Every matte surface usually has a matte paint or laminate coating, whose protective layer is sensitive to solvents and strongly alkaline or acidic cleaners.
- Therefore, neutral cleaning agents are the best choice.
- Using household products like diluted dish soap combined with microfiber cloths ensures effective cleaning without damaging the surface.
- Avoid abrasive sponges or brushes, as these microscopically damage the matte finish.

Regarding environmental protection: cleaners with biodegradable ingredients and no synthetic fragrances are recommended.

For stubborn stains, a little lemon juice can help, but please test it first on an inconspicuous spot.

Thank you for the step-by-step instructions. The lemon juice idea sounds interesting. Is there a better alternative to lemon juice if I want to avoid exposing the surfaces to acid? I’m concerned that fruit acid might cause discoloration.

Also, how do you manage regular cleaning (e.g., weekly) in terms of the amount of water and soap used on the cloths? Is it better to wipe lightly damp every time, or only clean when there is visible dirt?

I’m also curious whether food oils pose any particular challenges on the matte surface.

Yes, such oils can make the matte surface appear shiny, especially if you rub too hard or clean too aggressively.

My advice: For greasy stains, use a mild dish soap and water mixture and gently dab, do not rub. Then rinse with clean water and dry.

For regular cleaning, lukewarm water and a damp cloth are sufficient, and it’s best to keep exposure to contaminants low.

In response to Chento's question, I would like to clarify:

- As an alternative to lemon juice, diluted apple cider vinegar (approximately 1:10 dilution) can be used, but only sparingly and for a short duration.
- For weekly cleaning, I recommend using a slightly damp microfiber cloth without any soap to remove dust and light dirt.
- Heavier dirt should be treated only when necessary, using a mild cleaning agent to preserve the protective coating.

As a general rule: excessive cleaning with water or cleaners will cause the matte surface to degrade more quickly.
