Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA Metod kitchen countertop made of wood (beech) and would like to clean it properly without causing any damage. I am especially interested in proven methods that preserve the natural wood protection and avoid using harsh chemicals. What cleaning agents and care products do you use, and what is your specific cleaning process?

Additionally, it would be helpful to know how to remove stains, such as from oil or red wine, without damaging the surface.

Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hello Yalcin,

I would like to explain the ideal procedure for cleaning and maintaining your IKEA Metod wooden countertop:

1. Basic cleaning: Use a soft, damp cloth and lukewarm water to wipe the surface. Avoid using too much water, as wood can swell.

2. Stain treatment: For oil or red wine stains, use a gentle soap (liquid castile soap or a pH-neutral dish detergent) and gently dab the area. Do not rub, just pat.

3. Maintenance: Wooden countertops are often oiled or waxed. After cleaning, you should regularly treat the surface with cooking oil (e.g., linseed oil) or a specialized wood oil to protect the surface and seal the pores.

4. Avoid aggressive cleaners, scouring agents, or strong solvents. These can damage the protective layer.

Common mistakes include using too much water or harsh products. After maintenance, always make sure the surface is thoroughly dried.

I hope this guide helps you!

I always clean my Metod wood panels with a damp cloth and mild dish soap. Afterward, I let them dry and occasionally apply some cooking oil, preferably linseed oil. Please avoid using harsh cleaners.

Countertops are usually treated with an oil or varnish finish. Therefore, follow these guidelines:
- Clean only with a damp cloth and mild soap
- Avoid excessive water exposure, as the wood layers can swell
- Remove oil or red wine stains immediately using baking soda or a gentle cleanser, blotting rather than rubbing
- Regularly maintain with specially formulated wood oil to protect the surface

Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive microfiber cloths, as they can damage the finish.

Technically, this is the best approach to ensure the longevity of your countertop.

Hey, this topic is really important! I once had a wooden worktop that I cleaned the wrong way – a total mistake! Since then, I make sure to clean it very gently and regularly treat it with linseed oil.

You can also gently sand small stains with fine sandpaper (grit 240) and then re-oil the area. Caution: only if you have experience!

Wood is a living material, so treat it with care and you’ll enjoy it for a long time! 🙂

That’s exactly how I do it too. It’s important not to be too aggressive. If the stain is fresh, this usually works really well.
