Hello everyone,

I have had frameless glass doors from Ikea Pax in my bedroom for some time now, and I am currently wondering: What is the best way to clean these glass doors without risking scratches or leaving residue? My doors have a glossy surface. I want to avoid using harsh cleaners because I am unsure about how compatible they are with the material. Even regular window cleaners have sometimes left streaks, which bothers me quite a bit.

Can you provide tips on which cleaning products are suitable, whether microfiber cloths are better than paper towels or kitchen roll, and if there are any special tricks to keep in mind when cleaning Ikea Pax glass doors? Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hello TARIRO,

I have a lot of experience cleaning glass doors, including specifically Ikea Pax doors. Here is a small tutorial on how I proceed:

- First, I remove loose dust with a dry, soft microfiber cloth. Avoid rubbing dry or using rough cloths.
- For the actual cleaning, I use lukewarm water with a small amount of mild dish soap. I apply this with a well-wrung microfiber cloth.
- This effectively removes grease spots and dirt without aggressive chemicals.
- Then, I wipe again with a second, clean microfiber cloth to avoid any residue.
- If streaks remain, sometimes a mixture of water and a little vinegar helps—but be careful not to use this too often, as it can damage the surface.

A common mistake is using paper towels or kitchen paper. These often leave small crumbs or fibers that remain visible on the glass door.

In summary: soft microfiber cloths, mild dish soap, no harsh glass cleaners, and gentle, patient treatment. This method has worked well for me so far. Hope this helps you!

Thank you for the clear approach; that sounds very gentle. I have to be honest, I’ve always been worried that using too much cleaner might somehow damage the glass or cause it to develop cloudy areas.

In my case, the glass doors start to show small fingerprints after a while. I’m curious if anyone has experience with specific glass cleaners that are gentle and don’t leave streaks?

Sometimes I feel unsure whether just water is really enough, or if it’s better to use ‘special’ cleaners recommended for glass and mirror surfaces. Better safe than sorry, but I also don’t want to use unnecessary chemicals.

First of all, I appreciate the focus on material compatibility here. However, I would like to offer a somewhat controversial perspective:

I think it’s important to critically question what manufacturers of these “special glass cleaners” are actually trying to sell us. Often, simple household remedies like vinegar mixed with water or mild dish soap are just as effective. Perhaps the issue lies more in the cleaning technique than in the cleaning agent itself.

Furthermore, I am skeptical about cleaners containing alcohol or ammonia, as they could potentially damage the surface over time. From my own experience, I recommend minimal cleaning intervals—only when truly necessary—and gentle mechanical cleaning.

Can anyone provide long-term experience that demonstrates differences in effectiveness between various cleaners? Especially with Ikea Pax glass, the material is probably processed similarly to standard float glass, but the frame fittings or coatings often differ.

I use plain lukewarm water and a microfiber cloth to clean my Ikea Pax glass doors.

Avoid using harsh cleaners or abrasive materials.

This method works great and leaves no streaks or scratches.

Can someone maybe provide evidence of the differences in effectiveness between various cleaners based on long-term experience?

I can at least share something from my experience: I have had my Pax glass doors for almost 3 years and only use water mixed with a small drop of dish soap for cleaning. Occasionally, I follow up if streaks appear, but this is rare since I always wipe again with a clean cloth.

I have noticed no wear or dull spots. On the contrary, the glass looks like new after every cleaning, as long as you are careful.

I am well familiar with the issue of fingerprints – what has really helped me are very soft microfiber cloths, not used ones that often contain hidden crumbs.

So my advice: don’t clean too aggressively, rather clean gently but more often. This way the surface stays nice for a long time.
