Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some MALM furniture from IKEA with a lacquered finish. Since I place great importance on proper care and cleaning, I would like to know the best way to keep these lacquered surfaces clean without damaging them.

Are there specific cleaning products suitable for this, or should I stick to just water and a soft cloth? How can stubborn stains be removed without affecting the high-quality lacquer layer?

Additionally, I’m interested to know if there are any special maintenance products for long-term care that help preserve the shine and protective coating.

I look forward to your well-informed tips and experiences with MALM furniture and lacquered finishes!

Hello Benla57,

MALM furniture with lacquered surfaces usually features a glossy, painted melamine or MDF finish that is quite sensitive to mechanical and chemical influences. Therefore, I recommend the following cleaning procedure:

1. For daily cleaning, a soft, lint-free cloth slightly dampened with lukewarm water is sufficient. This gently removes dust and light dirt.

2. Stubborn stains can be removed using a mild dish detergent dissolved in water. It is important to immediately wipe with a damp cloth afterward to avoid leaving any residue.

3. Avoid aggressive cleaners, abrasive agents, or alcohol-based products. These can damage the lacquer or cause it to appear dull.

4. To care for and maintain the gloss, you can use special furniture polish products designed for lacquered surfaces. These create a protective layer that makes the surface more resistant to fingerprints and minor scratches.

5. Avoid letting water stand on the surface, as it can damage the lacquer layer.

In summary: gentle cleaning, no harsh chemicals, and furniture polish specifically for lacquered surfaces when needed.

Hope this helps you.

I agree, but honestly: who really maintains their MALM furniture that meticulously? For me, these pieces are practical, affordable, and sturdy – if a stain appears, I just use a regular household all-purpose cleaner.

Excessive care is more for display furniture. Sure, if you want to preserve every bit of shine, that’s fine, but who really wants that? If you value the high gloss, go ahead, but I think it’s too much effort for this type of furniture.

Just my opinion, but why be so careful with furniture that is clearly designed for everyday use?

I understand the point about practicality, but I also think that lacquered surfaces can suffer quickly if not treated properly. It would be a shame if the beautiful gloss fades due to incorrect cleaning.

Maybe I can encourage the thread starter: by following simple rules and not always using the harshest cleaners, you can keep the furniture looking good for a long time.

It also helps me to keep a soft cloth nearby and gently address small stains right away before they dry. That way, there’s less effort and no need to scrub 🙂

Thanks for the tip! Do you have any product recommendations? I’ve noticed that some polishes contain silicone – is that advisable, or should such products generally be avoided?

Also, how often should you apply polish without overdoing it? I want to avoid the finish becoming sticky or dull over time.

Looking forward to hearing your experiences and recommendations, especially regarding long-term care!

Hello Benla57,

an important note regarding furniture polish for lacquered surfaces:

There are polish products based on waxes or those containing silicones – I personally recommend using products without silicone. Silicone-based polishes can enhance the shine temporarily, but over time they form a layer that is difficult to remove and can cause stains or sticky surfaces.

As a supplement to regular cleaning, I suggest using high-quality polishes specially designed for lacquered furniture, for example from manufacturers like "Dr. Schutz" or "Auro," which do not contain aggressive ingredients and are based on natural waxes.

Apply sparingly: about every 2-3 months, preferably on clean, dry surfaces. The surface should be thoroughly cleaned before polishing to avoid trapping dirt particles.

This way, the lacquered surface remains protected, water-repellent, and glossy without unwanted residues.

I hope this helps you with your decision.
