Hello everyone,
I recently purchased some Malm furniture from Ikea, mainly dressers and nightstands. Since we have pets (a dog and a cat), I am concerned about how to properly clean and maintain these pieces without damaging the surfaces. Especially because Malm furniture often has a foil coating, which is not particularly resistant to moisture and harsh cleaning.
Does anyone have experience or tips on how to keep your Malm furniture clean with pets at home? Which cleaning products are safe to use on the foil coating? How do you deal with scratches or stains from pet hair, litter, or saliva? I want to prevent the surface from becoming dull or rough, or even the foil from eventually deteriorating.
Any help is much appreciated!

Hello everyone,
I’d like to add a few tips because caring for laminated Malm furniture is really a delicate matter:
- For daily cleaning, I use a microfiber cloth that I only slightly dampen with lukewarm water. No cleaning agents or only very mild ones, such as a special plastic cleaner.
- To remove pet hair, wearing a light rubber glove and running it over the surface helps—this effectively picks up the hair.
- For tougher stains, like saliva or litter, I use a gentle cleaning product with a neutral pH, for example, dish soap in a very diluted concentration.
- Important: Never scrub or use abrasive sponges!
- Finally, always dry the surface well to prevent moisture from getting under the laminate and to keep the furniture looking good for a long time.
With these steps, I haven’t experienced any major damage to my Malm dressers, even with a dog in the house.
If anyone is interested, I can gladly share specific brands that I use.

Regarding the topic "How do I clean and maintain Malm furniture when owning pets?" I would like to provide a structured overview:
1. Preparation: Remove loose dirt and pet hair dry using a soft dust cloth or rubber glove.
2. Cleaning:
- Use a slightly damp microfiber cloth with lukewarm water or a mild soapy solution (e.g., a few drops of dish detergent).
- Avoid aggressive, abrasive, or acidic cleaners!
3. Stain treatment:
- For stubborn stains, you can carefully use special film cleaners suitable for plastic surfaces.
- Always test first on an inconspicuous area.
4. Maintenance:
- To keep the laminate flexible and to conceal minor scratches, a special plastic care oil or furniture polish for plastic is suitable.
- A very small amount of olive oil can also help, but be cautious to avoid stains.
5. Drying:
- Always wipe the surface immediately after cleaning with a dry, soft cloth.
- Avoid standing moisture.
6. Prevention:
- Try to minimize scratches from pet claws, for example, by using scratching boards or rugs next to the furniture.
I am happy to assist with product recommendations or specific issues.

Hello everyone,
I find the discussion here very helpful, as I have just recently adopted a cat and am now also thinking about furniture care.
I am especially concerned about how to avoid annoying cat claw marks on the Malm surfaces. Do you have any tips on protecting the furniture without constantly having to keep the cat away?
Regarding cleaning, I try to keep it mild as well – but you’ve made me curious about the olive oil method. Doesn’t that sometimes leave residues that attract dust? Wouldn’t it need to be polished very regularly?
I look forward to your opinions or practical experiences, even if it doesn’t always work perfectly. 🙂

Could you or maybe Naomige recommend some specific products that are suitable for cleaning and maintaining laminated Malm furniture with pets? There are so many products available, and I would like something I can use long-term without worrying about any damage to the laminate.
I’m also interested to know if anyone has tried furniture polish and what long-term effects were observed.
Looking forward to your suggestions!
