Hello everyone, I recently noticed some unsightly water marks on my IKEA Malm furniture that appeared after placing glasses or cups on it. The surfaces look slightly spotted and dull, even though they are made of lacquered MDF. My question is: What is the best way to remove these water marks from Malm furniture without damaging the surface? Which cleaning products and methods do you recommend to help the furniture retain its original shine and protection? Thanks in advance for your tips!

First, a question in return: Have the watermarks already left permanent stains, or are they more like temporary water spots? This is crucial for choosing the right method.

With painted MDF surfaces, you need to be very careful because aggressive cleaners or abrasive treatments can damage the paint. I strongly recommend starting surface care with mild products specifically designed for painted wood and only increasing the intensity cautiously if necessary.

The best method is to use a damp cloth slightly moistened with dish soap and gently rub the areas. Then wipe them dry thoroughly. If that doesn’t work, a small amount of furniture polish often helps.

Regarding water stains on the finish of MDF furniture: water often leaves white marks by seeping beneath the paint or through deposits. It is important to avoid using alcohol or harsh solvents, as these can damage the clear coat.

An effective method is as follows:
1. Gently clean the furniture with a soft microfiber cloth and a small amount of mild dish soap.
2. If water stains are still visible, you can use a specialized furniture polish or silicone remover product designed for painted surfaces.
3. Be cautious with home remedies like toothpaste or baking soda: they may help but can be mildly abrasive.

Additionally, I recommend sealing the furniture after cleaning with a furniture wax suitable for painted surfaces to prevent future stains.

Thanks in advance to everyone! @LuMarcel43: Unfortunately, the edges are visible and in some areas even slightly duller than the original surface. No cracked paint or anything like that, but there are discolorations.

I already tried that, but unfortunately without success.

Do you have any specific product recommendations? I don’t want to risk damaging the furniture.

Hello dardan, I’m happy to share a simple step-by-step guide on how I deal with water marks on painted MDF furniture:

1. First, dust the affected area with a cotton cloth, then clean it gently with a slightly damp cloth and a mild dish soap. Wipe dry thoroughly.
2. If the water stains persist, you can try lightly rubbing a bit of olive oil or furniture oil into the spot with a dry cotton cloth. This often penetrates the surface stains and makes them less visible.
3. For tougher stains, there are special furniture polishes designed for high-gloss finishes, for example 'Poliboy High Gloss Furniture Care'. Be sure to test on an inconspicuous area first!
4. Never use abrasive cleaners or strong chemicals.

Important tip: Avoid rubbing with a vacuum cleaner or a wet cloth, as this often worsens water damage.

I’m happy to provide more detailed explanations of any steps if you’re interested.
