Good morning everyone, I have a Malm dresser set from IKEA, and unfortunately, some unpleasant stains have appeared on the surfaces, probably from liquids or maybe candle wax. My specific question: What methods and products are recommended to gently and effectively remove stains from Malm furniture without damaging the surface or material? I have read that these pieces are covered with a special foil, so I want to avoid harsh cleaners. Does anyone have experience cleaning or removing stains from Malm furniture and can offer advice? Thank you in advance!

To effectively remove stains from Malm furniture, caution is necessary since the surface is a melamine-coated particleboard. This means that harsh or abrasive cleaners can damage the surface. I recommend starting with a soft, slightly damp cloth and a mild dish soap for cleaning. Stubborn stains can often be removed with a gentle all-purpose cleaner containing diluted ammonia. After treatment, wipe the area with clean water and dry thoroughly. Be careful to avoid scratches from abrasive agents and always test first in an inconspicuous spot.

First, it would be helpful to know exactly what type of stains you are dealing with – water stains, grease, candle wax, or ink stains? Melamine furniture, as mentioned, is made from melamine-coated chipboard, which is low-porosity but sensitive to mechanical abrasion and harsh chemicals.

Step 1: Gently clean using a microfiber cloth and warm soapy water, being careful not to use too much water to avoid causing water stains.

Step 2: For oily or greasy stains, isopropyl alcohol in a low concentration may help; please test this on an inconspicuous area first. Avoid cleaners containing acetone or strong solvents.

Step 3: For candle wax, I recommend gently warming it (e.g., hairdryer on a low setting) and wiping it off immediately with a soft cloth. Never scrape with sharp objects, as this will permanently damage the surface.

It is also important to know how old the stains are, whether they have set in or are fresh, as this will affect the treatment.

I can completely understand how frustrating such stains are, especially on furniture you have invested time and money in. The same happened to me with my Malm dresser—I tried a product from the hardware store that was really strong, and in the end, the surface developed dull spots—so be very careful!

Sometimes it helps to avoid aggressive treatment and instead tackle the stain with patience and gentle cleaning over several days. If you'd like, I can gladly share my mild home remedy method, which brought me good results later on.

Just a quick note: For pine wood, it’s best to avoid using alcohol or harsh cleaners. Clean with warm soapy water and a microfiber cloth. For stubborn stains, a magic eraser can help, but test it carefully first.

I would like to add some practical details to TYRELL’s explanations:

Since Malm furniture has a melamine coating, it is sensitive to solvents such as acetone, turpentine, or nail polish remover. There is a risk of the surface film dissolving.

Step-by-step stain removal:

1. Start with a soft, damp microfiber cloth and a little dish soap to loosen surface dirt.

2. For grease stains, 70% isopropyl alcohol diluted with water may help, but be sure to test it first.

3. For dried-on residues (e.g. candle wax), gently warm the area with a hairdryer so the wax softens, then quickly wipe it away.

4. Stubborn stains can also be treated with a special plastic or furniture eraser. Rub very gently to avoid scratching.

Always finish by wiping the treated area with a damp cloth and then drying it. Avoid working too wet to prevent water from seeping into the edges and causing swelling.

What kind of stains do you have exactly? That would be important to provide more targeted advice.
