Hello everyone,
I own several MALM furniture pieces from IKEA, which I really appreciate. However, since these are mostly made from particleboard with a veneer finish, I am concerned about water damage. Particularly in areas like the bedroom or home office, small spills can happen from time to time.
My question is: How can MALM furniture be effectively protected against water damage, both preventively and if damage occurs? Are there specific sealants, protective products, or tips you would recommend?
I would appreciate detailed advice, including any common mistakes to avoid. Thanks in advance!

Additional information:
- Malm furniture consists of particle boards classified according to DIN EN 312 (usually E1 grade). These boards have significantly reduced strength when exposed to moisture.
- The foil coating acts as a barrier but is vulnerable at joints and edges.
- Preventive measures focus on minimizing contact with water and quickly removing any spills.
- No practical repair methods are known, as moisture cannot be removed once absorbed.
- For higher moisture resistance, it is advisable to choose different furniture or materials.
Conclusion: Malm furniture can only be protected from water damage to a limited extent; the main focus should be on prevention and prompt moisture removal.

Thank you for the many helpful tips and your patience. So it will come down to prevention and quick action.
One last question: Are there any practical recommendations for products (brand, type) that are ideal for the maintenance and protection of the membrane surface? I want to avoid harsh cleaners or waxes and prefer a product that protects the surface without causing damage.

As a product recommendation for the care of laminated surfaces such as MALM furniture, the following are suitable:
- Neutral cleaners, such as pH-neutral all-purpose cleaners, used in a very diluted form.
- Water-based furniture care products specifically designed for plastic laminates, e.g., "Pronto Kunststoff-Pflege."
- Avoid oil-based waxes, as they can dissolve the laminate.
Tip: Test the product first on a small hidden area to prevent any incompatibility.
For water protection, a thin layer of "nano-sealant for furniture" is recommended – some manufacturers offer such products, e.g., "Nanoprotec Möbelversiegelung" – this makes the surface hydrophobic, causing water to bead off.
Note: These nano products tend to be relatively expensive but provide long-lasting effectiveness.

"Nano-coating for furniture" makes the surface hydrophobic.Sounds good, but does anyone have long-term experience?
Often, such impregnations wear off after a few months, making them unnecessarily expensive. Maybe a good coaster and quick cleaning are more practical than trying to actively change the surface with a coating.

Long-term experiences with nano coatingsI occasionally use these nano coatings on laminated furniture. They need to be reapplied roughly every 6-12 months.
Advantage: They noticeably improve water repellency but do not replace regular maintenance or immediate wiping.
Still: They are more of a complementary protective measure rather than a cure-all.
For maximum protection, it’s best to combine multiple protective layers with careful handling.
