Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some furniture from the Malm series by IKEA. Unfortunately, I noticed that the surfaces are quite sensitive to scratches, which is especially frustrating with everyday use.

My question is:

How can I protect Malm furniture against scratches while maintaining its appearance for as long as possible, without affecting the look or feel of the furniture? I am looking for advice on both short-term protective measures and long-term strategies to preserve the surface. Are there any proven products or home remedies that work well?

Perhaps also recommendations for suitable care products or tips on avoiding common mistakes when handling Malm furniture?

Thank you in advance for your help!

As an addition:

For Malm furniture with melamine-coated surfaces, it is important not to use harsh or abrasive cleaning agents.

Avoid products containing abrasives or alcohol, as these can damage the protective layer.

After cleaning, it is recommended to use furniture care products based on wax, which smooth the surface and create a protective coating. Products containing carnauba wax or beeswax are worth mentioning.

My recommendation: Always clean gently and apply care products sparingly.

Here is a brief guide on how to effectively protect Malm furniture from scratches:

1. Initial cleaning: Remove dust and dirt using a dry, soft microfiber cloth.

2. Protection application: Attach high-quality felt pads under all decorative items. Make sure they are large enough to support the entire weight.

3. Surface treatment: Use a suitable furniture wax, such as one containing carnauba wax. Apply it thinly and gently polish the surface. This creates a protective layer.

4. Avoidance: Do not place sharp or heavy objects directly on the surface without protection.

5. Regular maintenance: Wipe the furniture with a lightly damp cloth every 1-2 weeks and apply a thin layer of wax monthly.

Common mistakes include using overly aggressive cleaners or not using pads under movable items. Following these steps will significantly extend the surface’s lifespan.

Felt pads and coasters are essential basics.

Do not place heavy or sharp objects directly on the surface without protection.

Wiping with a damp microfiber cloth is sufficient.

In addition to felt pads, it makes sense not to place furniture directly in heavily used areas.

Table mats and desk pads reliably protect the surface.

Adding foam edge and corner protectors can also help.

This is a household without children, but with occasional visits from pets.

In this case, I recommend protecting the top surfaces of the furniture from scratches caused by pet claws.

A special protective film made of transparent polyurethane (PU) can be particularly effective here. The film can be cut to fit precisely and is almost invisible.

Additionally, cleaning should consistently be done with a soft cloth, as dirt from animals often contains fine particles that can cause scratches.

In the long term, a combination of mechanical protection (such as furniture glides and film) and proper maintenance is key to minimizing wear and tear.

This is a crucial point! These PU films are highly abrasion-resistant yet visually unobtrusive. They can be applied almost seamlessly and protect the surface from minor impacts or scratches, such as those caused by pet claws.

Important: The film should be installed professionally or carefully fitted using the appropriate tools to avoid air bubbles.

If you’re interested, I can gladly provide sources or alternatives.

Proper cleaning of the film is also important—mild soap solutions and soft cloths are recommended to maintain the protective properties.
