Hello everyone,
I want to paint my IKEA Malm furniture to give it a more modern and sophisticated look. The surface is quite smooth and coated with melamine. My goal is to apply a high-quality, durable paint that adheres well and prevents issues like chipping or streaking.
I am especially interested in what specific preparations are necessary: Do I need a special primer for melamine? What is the best way to sand the surface without damaging it? Is there a recommended type of paint (e.g., acrylic paint, alkyd paint) suitable for this kind of furniture?
Additionally, I would like to know how to avoid unevenness while painting and whether spray painting or using a brush works better.
Could someone please provide a detailed guide or share tips based on their own experience? Thanks in advance!

Good morning,
first of all, it is important to lightly sand the melamine surface to ensure the paint adheres properly. Sandpaper with a grit of 220 is ideal to matt the surface without damaging it too deeply.
Afterwards, I recommend a special primer designed for plastics or melamine to help the topcoat adhere well. Water-based acrylic paints are usually sufficient for indoor use and have low odor, while synthetic resin paints are somewhat more durable but have a stronger smell.
For a smooth finish, spray paint is the better option as it applies evenly. Brushes can leave streaks, but with careful work and a high-quality flat brush, a good result is also achievable.
Important: apply several thin layers instead of one thick one and allow each to dry thoroughly.

Furthermore, the primer should dry for at least 12 hours and, if necessary, be lightly sanded with fine grit sandpaper (e.g., 400 grit). This ensures maximum adhesion and a smooth final finish.

By the way, I sanded it with fine sandpaper (grit 240) and then sprayed a primer. After that, I applied two coats of acrylic paint, also sprayed. It’s really important to keep the layers thin – thick layers can easily become sticky or run.
Pro tip: Wait a little after each coat, lightly sand the surface, then apply the next coat. It’s fun, and the dresser now looks very elegant and feels super smooth! 🙂

As an addition: sanding with the right grit is crucial. Too coarse and you damage the surface; too fine and the paint won’t adhere properly.
Choosing the correct primer is also essential. There are special adhesion primers for plastic or melamine-coated surfaces. Regular wood primers can cause problems here.
When painting, using a spray gun can create a very even finish, but the effort and initial cost are higher. For smaller areas, high-quality spray paint can also be used, but make sure it is compatible with melamine.

Just a small note: Whether you spray or brush, always work in well-ventilated areas and allow sufficient drying time. Some paints can take several days to cure completely, depending on the temperature and humidity.
Additionally, I would recommend applying a clear protective layer (for example, an acrylic-based clear coat) after the final paint, especially for frequently used furniture like Malm dressers that are often used daily.
